Mia looked at the clock for the tenth time. It was almost 2 o´clock, usually around 1:10pm she was out of work and on her way home, but she was stuck filling out some papers, it wasn´t one of her favorite things to do but it came with the whole package of being a nurse, it also gave her time to think about the officer Monica Fuentes. The way she looked at Brian when he finally came out, not hiding anymore behind the door afraid it was going to be someone else.
She had a million questions she wanted to ask him. Monica seemed more than just a person he used to work with in the past, they talked with such a familiarity, she could almost sworn they had something in the past, but why was it bothering her so much? Mia was with him now, right? She looked down at her handwriting, noticing how much force she was placing on the pen. Wait a minute! Was she feeling jealous?
“Focus,” she muttered under her breath. She shouldn’t be feeling jealous at all, but something about Monica… was she really there that day to ask for Brian´s help? Or was it for another reason?

A look at his watch confirmed that Mia should be off by now so Brian pushed himself off the fender of his car, he'd been leaning on for almost twenty minutes. Wondering what was taking her so long he pushed the sunglasses back onto the bridge of his nose and walked into the building she was working. He'd found out through Monica that he wasn't under investigation, at least not currently, so he could walk around in public as much as he pleased. Not wanting to bother anybody he sat down next to a patient in the waiting area and grabbed a magazine. It took only a few minutes until the man was called in to see the doctor and Brian was left alone. The magazine about the latest beauty trends didn't really hold his interest so he kept looking over the edge whether Mia was walking down the hall. The older nurse at the counter kept shooting equal glances back at him over the rim of her glasses and finally raised her voice. "If you want to be seen you have to come a fill out this form, mister." She held a form up in the air and waved it. "Er, no, thank you. I'm not here to be seen." He replied knowing that he was keeping the poor woman in the dark. It was his idea of entertaining himself. The nurse however didn't like his vague answer and told him. "If you're here to fix the air condition you'd better pick up your feet and follow me." She scowled at Brian.

She stifled a laugh as she finished her paperwork, hearing the last words of the older nurse. “Who are you talking to, Amber?” That was so Amber, a little impatient and it seems the person she was talking to got on her nerves. “I´m done with the paperwork and going home… but I´ll take care of this person,” she reassured Amber. She was facing the nurse but from where she was couldn´t see towards the waiting area, once she walked a little bit more was when she noticed Brian.
“Hi. So, you´re here to fix the air condition?” she joked with him chuckling. “Sorry about that. Ms. Amber is not a very patient person…” she leaned giving him a quick kiss. She looked at the clock: 2:30pm. “And once again sorry for not giving you a call, I got so busy with filling out some paperwork and didn’t notice it was this late…”
“Let´s go home…” she rubbed at her temples. The amount of work this morning at the hospital was unbelievable; more ER cases came in through the doors, she spent her morning running around trying to get everything done.

Brian was more tha willing to play the air con guy just for his own entertainment purposes. So when he finally heard Mia voice and that she wanted to take care of him he grinned to himself. Being taken care of by Mia- he could imagine worse things. “Hi. So, you´re here to fix the air condition?” He heard her chuckle and joined in as if he'd never seen Mia before. "Yes mam, can you show me where that old a/c is?"
He saw Ambers weary look following them, who demanded to know. "Shouldn't you get your equipment?" he followed Mia to a side room with a small desk and a couple of wardrobes for their scrubs. "She's got hair on her teeth. I hope if I ever need treatment I get the sweet brunette nurse, not that old dragon." he pulled Mia close to place a kiss on her lips. "It's pretty hot in here." He chuckled.
In regards to her apology he waved his hand. "Don't worry about it, I was busy reading Elle and Vogue. Time flies when you're having fun."
When she suggested to go home he offered her a different route. "How about taking a detour and going by some place."

"Yes ma´am, can you show me where that old a/c is?" she shook her head. Mia kept walking entering a small room where a few lockers were located at the far end. She opened her locker pulling out her bag as she began to remove her scrubs, taking a new set of fresh and comfortable clothes from the locker. It took her less than a second to change not even caring Brian was in the room.
"She's got hair on her teeth. I hope if I ever need treatment I get the sweet brunette nurse, not that old dragon." She turned unable to control her laughter. “Brian!” she tried to scold him but failed, and before she could say anything else he stopped her pulling her close to kiss her.
Her arms encircled his waist placing her forehead on his shoulder, she was glad he went looking for her, she never thought she´d be out of there. “A detour?” Mia looked at him. Where was he going to take her? “I wonder what you have in mind,” curiosity got the best of her and she forgot about home for a moment. “Alright, you win”

Brian kept looking out the gap of the door for Mia's colleague. When she was changed and ready to go he asked. "Suppose the coast is clear before she finds out I'm not here for the a/c." He tiptoed out and around the corner. On his way out his gaze fell on a room where a patient was waiting cradling his arm and blood running from his forehead. It wasn't a pretty sight. "I don't know how you can work here." He told Mia once he was out the front door. "You see so much bad stuff. I don't think I could do it day after day." He had been wondering why she took the job at the ER and not some pediatrician or dermatologist. Then again he used to be a cop and saw just as much crap if not more. Taking her hand like in old times he walked her to his car.

He saw so much bad stuff as a cop too like murders, people being shot, fights, drug dealers, it was almost the same bad things she saw on a daily basis. Emergency cases came in through those doors every minute, some cases weren’t bad as others, but she loved it. Was is stressful? A lot, but her rewards for such a stressful job was to just keep the patients alive.
“I´d say the same thing for your old job, I am sure I couldn´t do it either, yet there is one thing in common we both see… the loss of people. Sometimes we are able to save them and some others…Well…” she didn’t finish her sentence but he pretty much understood what she meant, she interlaced her fingers with his own as they kept walking.
It didn´t take them long to reach the parking lot, they walked a little bit more once they spotted the car; she was still trying to figure out where he was taking her. “Can you at least give a hint of where exactly you are taking me?” she loved surprises but she became curious when he didn´t explain where he wanted to go.

"No, not yet." He wiggled his brows to let her know he was teasing her. Opening the door for her and cleaning an old coffee to go off the seat he waited for Mia to get in. Before he moved around he leaned his forearm on the open door and looked down on her because there was something he'd always wondered and never really asked. "Can I ask you a question?" Brian's expression became stern from one moment to the next. "I know you hated that I was an undercover cop working against your brother but I know you as somebody who always wanted to keep your brother on the straight and narrow. You're not a law breaker. Did it ever bother you that I went back into law enforcement? Because honestly, I really thought I was doing the right thing." His work life had mostly been devoted to law enforcement and even though he fell into the traps of street racing and getting mixed up in the troubles of his friends and family, Brian never doubted that being a cop had been a good thing.

“Ah! Come on! Just a tiny clue” She got in and waited for him to close the door but instead he stood there, she turned wanting to know why he wasn’t closing the door. "Can I ask you a question?" he wasn’t teasing her anymore, he became serious and she wonder what was bothering him. “Yes,” he waited for his question. He had a point about Mia hating to know back then he was a cop, of course she wasn’t expecting for him to just reveal who he really was. In a way she felt used by him, he got what he wanted and got accepted into her family, accepted by her brother and for him to pull a stunt like that, it really hurt her to see him go back to the life of a cop. She let out a breath thinking her answer, thinking carefully about what she was going to say to him. She took a hold of his forearm “It did bother me a little that you went back to your job instead of trying to make things better with me and with Dom after that day where Vince almost died. But of course we wouldn´t listen to you if you tried back then to talkt o either one of us “ Mia look up at him as she continued to answer his question. “But the other part of me understood that being a cop was your life. It was all you knew, you just fell in love with me and I did the same, It wasn´t something we planned, it just happened. Even though we went through a lot once we took our separate roads, I am just glad that I have you again. It took me all this years to finally realize what I let go. I guess I just lost my balance…” She looked away feeling the tears burn her eyes, to think of that day when she just told him she was done with him, it was hard on him to just erased her form his heart from one day to the next and she never understood the power of her words until a few days later when it finally sink in. When she finally found herself alone… She cleared her throat. “I love you and I promise you I will not make that same mistake again” A sincere and slight smile came back to her lips.

Their conversation had taken a quick turn to a stern subject but it was important to Brian to know how mia felt. It was no surprise that she didn't like his job at first. Brian was surprised that him going back to being a cop after they first met actually bothered her. "It wasn't like I had a choice. Dom went into hiding, so did I. I couldn't really go back to you, plus that look you gave me when Vince got injured and you found out that I'm a cop told me how much you hated me for it." Brian remembered vividly the day when the heist went down, Vince almost lost his life along with his arm and Jesse got shot by Tran. It was one heck of a dark day. On top of that his relationship with Mia went down the drain in a heartbeat.
"I ran half way across the country before the cops caught up with me. It was work for them or go to jail. What do you think was the smarter choice? How long do you think I'd last in prison?" Had he never told why he actually joined the force again in Miami? Brian got a little agrovated over this old stuff because nobody seemed to understand his side.
Mia continued to tell Brian how she felt about him today, which calmed him down. Obviously they were okay now and the promise that she wouldn't push him away was worth a lot. "I appreciate that. I never understood why you wanted me out of your life back then." It had hurt a great deal but Brian was ready to give her another chance. "You didn't answer my question though. I meant: I'm a cop at heart. I know that it always collided with being a street racer but I always thought it was the right thing for me to do. I might try and go back one day. I mean my name has been cleared and there's apparently no investigation against me, just Jack. I need a real job and it's all I know. I'm just wondering how you feel about that."

“There was no other way for me to react,” the shock that crossed her face when he had to called for backup when Vince started to go into shock and to remember Dom´s face. “I mean we opened the doors of our house to you and then you just had to say who you really were…” there was a lot going on that day, not only losing a member of her family, but having her heart tore in two not only with Brian but with her family, she wonder what would´ve happen that last moment when they stood in the distance watching at each other´s eyes, what would´ve happen if she didn’t follow Dom´s orders to go back to the car and instead stayed with Brian?
"I ran half way across the country before the cops caught up with me. It was work for them or go to jail. What do you think was the smarter choice? How long do you think I'd last in prison?" She shook her head, but bit her tongue, she could really see it was bothering him a lot, she wanted to just yell at him she too had to run away, that she too was afraid, for a while she didn’t have a life, she lived only to hide from the law, wondering if one day she was going to go back to her house and see her family or what remained of it again, but decided to keep quiet and just listen it wouldn’t be good for her to raised her voice.
“…I'm just wondering how you feel about that” her head snapped up, she couldn’t believe his words, but what else could he do? Where else could he work? “ As much as I don´t like it, I can´t just deny you the chance to go back. If that´s something you want to do then go for it, I´ll be by your side supporting you but if the time comes and you had to choose between who´s going to jail. Who is it going to be? Dom or Jack?” She wished from Brian to never found himself in that kind of situation one day but...what if he was place in that position? He would give his life for Jack even though they seemed to hate each other.

The way she was reacting wasn't how Brian had expected at all. For some reason he had thought that she actually finds some good in him enforcing the law, keeping murderers and thieves off the streets and helping good people. Instead she was totally against it. It was plain to see that her good mood had turned into anger “ As much as I don´t like it," That was all Brian needed to hear. In fact it was exactly what he didn't want to hear. " I can´t just deny you the chance to go back. If that´s something you want to do then go for it, I´ll be by your side supporting you but if the time comes and you had to choose between who´s going to jail. Who is it going to be? Dom or Jack?” Was she really trying to say he'd lock either one of them up. Now it was Brian's gaze that was becoming dark. "That's not fair, Mia, and you know it. I'd never do anything against either one of them. I've had a chance to arrest both of them but never did. You know me better than that." Was that really what she thought? That he'd turn against his own family. "Just look at it. I've helped Dom and my brother when he went down to Mexico and what does the stupid ass do, close me out of his life!" It seemed the story of Brian's life. People, who were close to him, had a tendency to tell him to get lost. It was true. He had gone to Mexico with Jack and brought a whole truckload of drugs back. It was a miracle that his name wasn't on top of the FBI wanted list yet. The fire must have eliminated all finger prints. Brian had also crossed the line of good and bad on many occassions before. Maybe she was right and he was simply not 'good' enough to be a cop.
Disappointed and slightly angry he added. "For some reason I thought that you'd really support me. I mean, even if you and your brother don't think so, enforcing the law is actually a good thing. The laws are made to protect people."
With that he walked around the car and got in the driver seat. Avoiding eye contact with her he put the key in the ignition. "But you don't have to worry. They're not going to take me back with my track record anyway."
He started the engine and backed backed out of the parking spot a little faster than necessary.

She couldn´t pretend to be happy, it was how she felt towards him trying to go back into law enforcement, of course it was good to help people, and he had a million chances to place either Dom or Jack in jail, but he didn’t. Would history repeat itself once he went back as a cop? She didn’t know what to think anymore, she loved him but it scared her to know he wanted to join the force.
He was right, he helped not only Jack but Dom too on many occasions but could he really do that once he had a badge and gun in his hands? Was he capable of thinking with a cool head if a time like that ever came? It was bad for her to think that way, to think that someday he would have to choose, to even doubt. His work required following orders, would it always be like that? Would he feel better if she lied to him and reassure him it was okay for him to go back? He wanted her honest opinion, he had it even if he didn’t like it was the way she saw it.
He was angry, she was too. He continue to let out his anger, she wished she could´ve just get out of the car; let him alone for a moment. “…enforcing the law is actually a good thing. The laws are made to protect people.” “Brian, that´s…” but he walked around to the driver´s side, she didn’t finish what she was about to say. Once he entered the car, he didn’t turn to see her; Mia didn’t bother to look at him either. But he put the key in the ignition and backed out of the parking spot faster, his way to show her how pissed off he was with her.
While Brian paid attention to the road, she looked out the window, everything was a blur from how fast he was driving, and even the freaking blur seemed more interesting. It didn’t matter anymore for him to take her the place he had in mind, and she was certain he wasn’t going to, not when they were like this. She just wanted to go home or even go back to the hospital to work extra hours, to just calm down.
She felt her chest tighten, unable to release her anger just like he did. Hopefully the ride to her home would remove some of that anger…

Brian took it all out on the road. His frustration about Mia's lack of understanding went right into his gas pedal and gear stick. The brake didn't get much loving though. By the time he had ignored her huffing long enough that they arrived home he had worked through most of it, the sour tasted remained however. After he killed the engine he looked over at her and said much calmer. "I'm pretty disappointed. I just don't know what else to do. No decent garage would hire me as a mechanic and what else can I do? Deliver mail? Or work at McDonalds? But if it helps I could ask for desk duty. Would that make any difference for you? I'd just be pushing paper around." The one thing he didn't want was stress between him and Mia, who was pretty much the only good thing in his life right now.

He sounded less agitated than a few minutes ago. She could feel his gaze on her, but she didn’t turn to see him. It was hard to imagine Brian at another job other than being a cop, not because she thought he was not capable of doing anything else, because he was smart and could do a hundred more jobs, but being a cop was the one thing he knew, who he was before he met her. Just like being a nurse was her life before meeting Brian, she just couldn’t see herself working at any other place other than a hospital. "No. If you want to go back to being a cop, then go back. Why stay on desk duty if you are going to be unhappy? I don´t want that…” To place aside what he really wanted for her? to make her happy when deep down he was dying to go back and keep protecting people? No...
She finally turned to see him “I don´t want you to feel disappointed. Sorry, I just-I guess I panic a little, you have one of the most dangerous jobs,” Even if she didn´t like it, she´d find a way to love it. If she was in his position, she was sure he´ll do the same for her, that he´ll try to understand her, so why couldn´t she do the same for him? “Do what you feel is right…”

Her tone had changed now that Brian was calmer as well. There was a little more understanding, too. It was obvious she didn't like the fact that he wanted to go back to being a cop but she at least gave him the okay. "I'm not going to be unhappy on desk duty. Who knows, maybe I even like it." When he first started he wanted nothing more than chasing the bad guys by foot or in a car, infiltrating gangs as undercover cop. It all seemed very exciting. "I learned the hard way that being on the streets is not always the most rewarding thing." Since the babies were born he was more worried about his own safety, even though Mia was the one mainly taking care of them. "I know that it's dangerous and I'm a father now. That kind of changed my take on perspective." Mia saw her fair share of wounded cops at the ER and Brian understood that she'd do anything to keep him out of there. Finally getting over his anger he took her hand a squeezed it. "I wouldn't try to keep you from being a nurse either, even if it means waiting half an hour with a red haired dragon." Was his attempt of a joke about Mia's colleague. "I do feel it's the right choice. Thank you, I appreciate it."

It was his choice whether he wanted to start on desk duty or go out there and chase bad guys, the good thing about it, it was to see Mia finally just let him be, even if it was dangerous if it was something he wanted to do, the worst thing she could´ve done was to stand in his way for fulfilling one of his dreams, there was also that little part of him being a father and that stopped him a little to change desk duty.
He was so much calmer; there was no tension between them anymore. She let him take her hand, he was right he wouldn’t try to change her mind on being a nurse, it was also dangerous same as a cop just because she didn’t carry a gun meant the job she was wasn’t dangerous, through the doors of that same hospital came a dozen people, each with a different problem in mind. In the past she found in situations worse if not almost the same than Brian as a cop.
Once again Amber´s name was mention. “Leave the dra- I mean Amber alone,” it was hard to keep a straight face anymore, it was all it took for her to chuckle changing the whole atmosphere. “Give it a few more weeks and you´ll love her,”

Mia's attitude was getting nicer. She let Brian take her hand and even offered a small smile. It looked like she was going to be okay with his choice even if she didn't like it. But that was exactly what was bothering Brian. He didn't understand why Mia was so much against him being a cop. He let the topic go and got out of the car. "Dragon, yeah, dragon, call her by her real name. You don't need to be shy around me." He joked. "What do you mean? I have to keep coming back and pretend to fix the air condition for two weeks before she turns into a gentle beauty?" He shooked his head and laughed. "I'll start waiting outside for you. I'm not a big fan of that place anyway." Brian took her hand and pulled her towards the house but then took a detour through the back yard. "Ready for the detour?" letting her step in front of him he stepped behind her and placed his hands on her eyes. "Close your eyes. I have a surprise for you."

“Just stop it,” her stomach hurt from laughing so much. It seemed like she was forgiven and so was he, it was like they never had an argument a few minutes ago. She got out of the car and got ready to enter her house but he took her hand instead preventing her to do so.
She felt bad for what he had to hear, of what she thought about his old job and here they were smiling at each other, holding hands. In her mind the detour was long gone, did she even deserved for him to be nice with her and still show her that detour? She nodded stepping in front of him.
He placed his hands on her eyes so she wouldn’t see. “Alright, I have my eyes close…” she was excited yet nervous and afraid at some point she was going to fall but he wasn’t going to let that happen, even if it was a few steps for her to reach her destination, he was going to take care of her.

Together they approached the 'surprise' in the backyard. Then Brian dropped his hands from her eyes and let her see what exactly the big surprise was. In between the two old trees the old, small hammock had disapeared. Instead there was a new double hammock with soft cotton fabric instead of the previous rope. "Perfect place for two to just 'hang'" Brian grinned. "I couldn't resist when I saw the thing at Home Hardware." He wrapped his arms around her waist remembering the morning when they had fallen asleep on the law together. "This also saves us from having ants and snakes crawl over us when we pass out in the backyard." His phone rang but he ignored it for the time being. Instead he motioned for Mia to test it.
