"You act as if I never did anything around here." Jack smirked without bothering to pull his head from under the hood. A job like this required some time and effort to be put in to and his brother did say he needed it done ASAP.
"Yup. Which means I might as well do the water pump, too, since the belt is going to be off now anyway and they have a tendency to go hand in hand." He answered, stopping his actions for just a brief moment while his brow slightly furrowed. Did he just say 'I'? Shaking it off rather quickly, he continued removing all the necessary obstructions. He had made the offer and started the job, he might as well finish it. Didn't hurt he was enjoying killing time this way, either.
"Could you hand me that.." He mumbled, finally pulling his head out from under the hood. Instead of pointing at any tool, he pointed at the donuts on the shelve while his free hand grabbed a rag to clean the grease of his skin. Who didn't work better on a full stomach?

Brian fully expected to hear...the wrench, the whatever but had to laugh when Jack wanted a donut. Brian grabbed one and threw it over to his brother. "Catch." Then he too a sip of coffee and put his head in where Jack had pulled it out. He couldn't help but admire the skills the younger one had acquired. "Where did you learn this? Did dad teach you?" Their father had been a bit of a hobby mechanic and used to race when he was younger...all leagl though. he never found out about his sons illegal driving actions even though brian suspected him to know. Their dad never really asked a lot about what they did. maybe it was better that way. "Have you heard from him lately? Does he know you're engaged?"

Jack caught the donut midair and shrugged in a non caring fashion while he took a bite. He and the old man had never seemed to get along very well, although he had to admit it had changed some lately. Maybe it was the distance...
"Nah, you know me and him never had those 'father and son' bounding moments. When you don't have the money to take your rust-bucket to a garage, you have to teach yourself a thing or two if you want to keep it rolling." He mumbled with his mouth still full, finally swallowing the rest of the donut down when he leaned against the side of the car. Most things he knew were self taught by doing and learning. It was practically all the rust-bucket he had back then was good for.
"And no they don't know I'm engaged yet. We don't talk much and when we do, all I get to hear is that mom misses us and wants us to visit." He smiled briefly before he looked at his brother. "What about you? You talk to the folks much?"

"More now that they met Mia and we have Tyler. I think mom's itching to come and cuddle with the little guy. Might be an opportunity for you to spill the beans." He took another slow sip of the hot brown liquid. "I really don't want to get in the middle of some of the stuff we've been dealing with. as long as everybody thinks we don't care about each other they are safe and I want to keep it that way." Their parents had no idea how dangerous Brian's job really was nor that he'd been to prison or in the hospital. if they found out they'd call on a daily basis. "They'll love Faye. Mostly cause she's a lawyer and can keep your sorry ass out of jail."

"Wasn't planning on stocking up on soap-on-a-rope any time soon though, bro." Jack shot Brian a wink before shoving the last piece of donut in his mouth. Jail was the last place he wanted to go even though, with the probation still hanging on his ass, his actions sometimes told otherwise. He never said he always was the brightest bulb in the box..
"But you're right. I'm sure they'll appreciate her uh.. qualities, as much as I do." He smirked at the hinted double meaning while wiping his hands on his now slightly grease stained jeans. Obviously it weren't her brains he had initially gone for.
"So, boss-man. You gonna stand here all day drinking coffee and scarfing down donuts while I do all your work for you, or what?"

"Nope." Brian pushed himslef away from the shelf he was leaning on and sat the coffee down. "I'm er get my hands real dirty, bro." He held up his hands and grabbed the toolbox. "So, what do you want me to do?" He smirked while walking over to the car again. "Qualities, huh? and what would those be?" His grin grew wider. "Her witty words, cute smile or is it that cute butt and the two, well rounded..." he made a chesture in front of his chest.

"Oh, brother. The things she can do to a man, I can tell you some damn fine stories about that.." Pausing only to heighten the anticipation for his next words, he draped an arm around his brother's shoulder. He really wasn't lying about the stories..
"But I won't." He full out grinned, slapping Brian upside the head when he pulled his arm back. "You can finish what I started. Take the belt off... And before you say it, I'm not talking about yours. After that, it's the water pump's turn."
He let out a breath. Did he just tell Brian what to do..? Right. Trying to quit or not, he could use a damn cigarette by now.
"Since I'm not on the payroll anymore, I think I'll be taking an extra five now.."

Having Jack make fun of him, slapping him and then ordering him around didn't bother him in the slightest. that's how tired he was. Following his brothers orders he started fumbling around with the belt. He watched Jack walk outside the garage and light a smoke out of the corner of his eye. It smelled good. That was strange. With a shrug Brian followed his brother outside and leaned against the wall next to him his hand reaching for the pck of smokes. "may I?2 He then lit one and took a deep drag. How strange. Brian wasn't a smokerbut today it was what he needed. "You#re bad influence, little brother." They stood in silence for a while. Then Brian nudge jack and looked at him with a hint of a smile. "I'm gld we're good again."

Jack briefly looked Brian over when he joined him outside. Since when did his brother start pinching smokes off of him. Shrugging it off, he handed over the pack without a word. If Brian wanted to take.. what was it they said? 5 minutes off of his lifespan, it was his choice.
Taking another drag, he allowed himself to enjoy the Californian sun beating down on them while he leaned his back against the wall. In moments like this, he at least didn't need to worry about money, how he'd gotten it this time or any brother fights. Luckily this one hadn't ended up in a fist fight like last time.
"Yeah, same here.." He nodded in agreement, letting smoke flow free along with his words. For as long as it would take between them anyway...

Brian let the cigarette hang loose between his lips and squinted up at the sun. Another bright sunny day in Cali. It was getting chillier outside though. Time to get out the warm jackets.
"I love you, brother, you know that right?" Brian needed to say it after what had happened last time they met at the garage. No matter how badly Jack fucked up. That wouldn't change.
"Almost Christmas...how are you guys going to celebrate?" "Hey" he rolled over his shoulder still against the wall, took a drag and then the cigarette between his fingers so he could speak. "Wanna take a roadtrip up to mom and dads with the girls?" At first it was just to safe their parents the drive but then it seemed like a good way to spend a peaceful Christmas away from Verone and the likes.

For once, Jack left his jokes and one liners behind and only nodded in response. Not being one to share feelings easily, he was already damn glad his brother hadn't taken it as far as to hug him, but he knew this sudden revelation wasn't simply coming out of the blue. It wasn't every day your brother took it two or three steps too far in a drunken haze.. Although, didn't that mean he should be the one saying it?
"Yeah, man. Love you, too." He quickly mumbled in an almost indistinct manner, not bothering to look at Brian while he took the last drag of his cancerstick and flicked it away. At least he had said it for a change, right? Instead of beating the bloody hell out of the sucker.
"You actually wanna spent Christmas in Barstow? Act like some white picket fence family?" He finally turned his attention on Brian, raising his eyebrows in disbelieve for a moment before he opted to rein in his attitude. He hadn't seen their parents since the wedding nor spoken much, if at all. It couldn't hurt that bad to actually visit them for a change, could it.
"I don't know. Maybe.." He shrugged.

Brian noticed that Jack neither looked at him nor did it sound very sincere when Jack said that he loved him. Briefly he wondered whether it was something jack just didn't say or whether he actually harboured hard feelings against his brother for whatever reason. "Do you have a problem with me? Did I miss something?" He voiced his feelings.
In reply to the picket fence he simply shrugged. "Man, we're as far from picket fence family as it gets. I can't hurt to see the old folks every once in a while. you know they miss us and want to get to know the girls. Dad's just not comfortable driving longer distances any more."

"What? Why would I have a problem with you?" Jack turned his attention on Brian was more, this time furrowing his brow. Was his brother really trying to pick a fight with him, again? What kind of bullshit was that. As the younger sibling, that should be his job and his job only.
"You want me to jump in your arms and scream 'I love you' at the top of my lungs? Cause I will. I'd even throw in a kiss if it'll convince you." He smirked widely. He'd do neither unless of course it would be to embarrass Brian in front of others. Otherwise it would just be... awkward.
"Alright, alright. If everyone's fine with it, we'll go." He grumbled, raising a hand up to stop his brother's endless flow of arguments. Damn, if he knew he'd be competing for 'son of the year'...

At first brian flinched because he though he had just cause another argument and fists to fly but he soon relaxed when he heard Jack offer a kiss. "Well that'd be something for a change." He put the smoke back between his lips and pointed at his cheek. "Hm?"
With a laugh he took another drag and then dropped it on the ground. He reached in his pocket and dialled their parents number. It had been the same for the past 30 years. "Hey mom, it's Brian. Hi, yeah, good. Everything's fine...yes, with Jack as well." he rolled his eyes and waited for their mothers questions to stop. "Listen, i only have a minute. How do you feel about me and Jackie coming up to see you for Christmas with the girls?" He made faces while his mothers excited chatter could be heard on the other end. "What I thought. We'll see you next week then." He hung up. "Settled. Any objections are too late now...Now get to work so I can afford that trip!"

Jack raised his eyebrows, huffing slightly when his name fell. Why did the woman always need to have extra confirmation on him? He wasn't the only trouble maker in this family. Maybe he should open up a book about his brother sometime.
With his hands in his pockets, he waited for the end of the phone call, smirking when the excited voice of their mother reached even his ears before Brian hung up. That should promise something for when they actually were in Barstow...
"What? I don't even work here anymore." He grumbled under a half-assed protest while he walked back in to the garage, reminding himself he was the one who had made the offer. This was definitely going to be the last time he'd be playing good Samaritan.
"If 7500 dollars isn't enough for a trip to Barstow, than I don't even want to know how deep that hole in your pocket is, bro.

'7500.' Brian thought and once again wondered where the money had come from. Secretly he hoped Faye had given it to Jack. By now his brother must have learned how much trouble illegal actions caused and he knew he was still on probation. Brian shot him another look and simply nodded. "Yeah but I got bills to pay." Without another word he made his way back to the car focussing on the task ahead and secretly making plans for their trip. A strange feeling overcame him when he though about taking Mia back home.
