Amira shook her head softly as she began to pace the entrance to the local bookshop. It was a public space. Ample lighting. Lots of people. Decent coffee and some good reads. Perfect place to make sure that they didn't attract attention. Perfect place to make sure that they both walked out alive.
Why the hell did I agree to this? She asked herself, playing over the rushed conversation her and Brian had not too long ago. He knew about her. The real her, not the bullshit. And yet, she knew nothing about him. Why the hell did Angel have to go and mess things up?
She took a long drag off of her cigarette and flicked it into the gutter as she continued to wait for Brian. She had questions and Amira was pretty sure that he did too. How many of them she chose to answer and how truthfully was still up to her.

Brian had chosen to park a block away. He walked along the sidewalk with busy people passing him by. He had just gotten off duty and changed into casual clothes, baggy pants and Vans T-shirt, before he went to meet Amira. Behind his sunglasses he could spot her from a good distance. She really didn't look the type that you would find at a book shop.
When he approached her he gave her a friendly smile. He didn't want to come off hostile just in case. "Hi Amira." He opened the door and let her walk inside. Quickly he threw a glance back to check whether she had brought anybody along who might be watching them.

She watched as Brian sauntered up to her, in his usual tee and jeans. She nodded towards him and for the first time since they had met, she felt vulnerable. Something about their meeting and him knowing who she really was didn't make her feel safe around him any more. Things had changed. They were now different.
Amira nodded at him before turning on her six inch heels and leading the way. She had stepped into the bookstore a few minutes before, checked it out and found a quiet, discreet spot in the back where they could talk without interruptions.
It's not like there was much to be said, or rather, there wasn't much she could say. She knew the rules and knew that nothing incriminating could pass through her lips. All of their lives depended on it.
The only reason she had agreed to meet with Brian was to see how much shit Angel had gotten them into. Angel had been avoiding her like the repo man ever since the races. She could've used her crew to track him down, but that would involve dragging more people into this mess.
She sat down at the table, checking the entrances. Amira pushed the menu to the side, crossing her legs and flipping her hair over her shoulder. She folded her hands on her lap and stared blankly at Brian.
"Whaddya know?" She barked, the friendliness gone in her voice. She was no longer Amira, the care free girl who just wanted to have some fun and make some friends. She felt that glazed, cold look seep into her eyes.
She was now Amira. The gang leader.

Brian took his time to answer her question choosing his words carefully. His eyes tried to interpret the look on her face. It had changed. It was no longer flirty. She meant business.
"I know that a friend of yours is pretty brutal. Did you send him to get your money?" Brian wanted to know. When he didn't get an answer right away he leaned closer to her and lowered his voice. "He's a gang member, isn't he? He told us Jack would be off the hook if we hekp him hold up another gang."
Brian didn't see any change of expression. "Is my brother off the hook, Amira?"

Amira cleared her throat as she thought about the answers and how much truth she should let him have. Jack and him clearly knew what Angel was all about, but how much did they know about her?
"I may have mentioned to Angel the predicament I was in because I was low on cash. He may have taken it upon himself to track you guys down and make a decision he shouldn't have. If Angel did indeed reach out to guys, he did so without my permission or my request," she said, making sure to choose hers words wisely.
She still didn't know how much shit Angel had gotten them all into. What had they done that night? Did the brothers get their hands dirty? Or were they just witnesses?
"Angel is a man of his word. If he says that Jack is off the hook, then Jack's off the hook. As far as for Angel being a gang member, I don't know anything about that. He's simply a friend. What he does when I'm not around is his business."
She waited briefly before delivering the following. "Unless you make it my business.... What exactly happened between you, Jack, and Angel?"

Brian watched her closely when she was speaking. It was hard to interpret her gestures and expressions. She had obviously learned to keep a straight face. Brian wasn't sure whether to beleive that she didn't know Angel was in a gang and she wasn't involved with a gang either. It sounded like she was in control. "Your 'friend' threatened us so we helped him ...why do you want to know, Amira?" Brian figured she already knew anyway. "You probably shouldn't know so I don't get you in trouble. Let"s just say good honorable citizens shouldn't do what we did."

"What I actually wanna know is what kept you from running right to the cops? If good honorable citizens don't do what you guys did, why do it in the first place?" She couldn't help the smirk that crawled onto her face. Amira slipped so easily into her alter ego. The one that was always in control and never feared anything nor anybody. It was what had kept her out of cuffs so far, kept her on her toes. It was what made her good.
"I have tried to contact Angel, to confirm your side of the story. He seems to be out of town right now. How convenient. I guess I'm interested because I'm curious. What would piss you off, be so bad that it'll keep you from going to the cops and so wrong that Angel is hiding out from me?"
She pursed her lips at the last part of her statement. It sounded bad. Angel was indeed hiding out from her and she was eager to know why. She hadn't bothered to ask any of the other crew members what exactly was going on, she didn't wanna seem like she wasn't in control.
If one word about this got out to her brother or to anyone higher up on the ladder....

Brian had to come up with an answer fast. "Well, first of all Angel was very convicing when he waved a gun in my face and told me to help him to hold up that gang." He looked around and lowered his voice. "Plus I've been in trouble with the law before and so has Jack." It was true. Amira didn't have to know what kind of trouble.
Brian frowned when the memories of that night became vivid again. "What am I supposed to do now? Go to the cops and say...sorry, I shot a guy but it wasn't my fault?"
His eyes now found Amiras. "I'm glad if Angel is out of town. Don't get me wrong but it sounds like you're in charge of him. Are you?"

Amira felt her heart soften as she realized that Brian and Jack were not the same cold-hearted bastards she and Angel frequented with. They were just two normal guys that were dragged into something they had no business dealing with. She tried to come up with ways to make this right, but how could she? Clearly Angel had taken them on a wrong turn. They had gotten their hands too dirty and now there was no going back.
"Angel and I are old friends. We look out for each other and I fear he may have seen you two as a threat. Eventually he'll come out of hiding and I can come up with a way to fix all of this, but for now, you and Jack are safe from whatever it was you did with him. Anybody gives you problems, feel free to throw his name around and if not, mines. It'll open a lot of doors," she said.
As she pictured Brian going to the cops and spilling the beans about whatever crew they had held up, she knew trouble was right around the corner. "And as for the cops, think it through. I would hate to have to attend your funeral, Brian. Word on the street is that Angel's not one to be messed around with."

At first Amira's words calmed Brian down. He'd been worried for Jack's safety mostly but also a little bit for Mia who came over frequently. He didn't want her to be there if Angel ever paid them another visit. When Amira mentioned that Angel might kill him he suddenly got goosebumps. "Is that so? Why would he kill me?" He asked while trying not to let his worries show. "I'm not going to the cops. I'd have to rat myself and my brother out! I'm not stupid."
Brian contemplated for a moment whether digging deeper would look suspicious to her. He tried it anyway. "Angel mentioned that he might have other 'jobs' for us. What did he mean by that?"

Amira cocked her head to the side and began to think. Apparently Brian and Jack had gotten their hands dirty enough to keep them from going to the cops, but where they willing to keep on following Angel? Were they willing to cross that line once again?
"I don't know exactly what it is he does, but he's well known. Connected to certain persons, or so they say. I'm sure that if he meant what he said about more jobs then he would've left you a way to get in contact with him. Other than that, I can just put in a good word or see if I can get a hold of him for you," she replied.
She leaned in towards him, staring intently into his eyes. "Don't let him lead you down the wrong path, Brian. If you don't wanna be involved just tell me so. I'll make sure he goes away. I don't want you to become a victim in all of this," she whispered.
She felt bad that Brian and Jack had been dragged into all of this because of her. She felt even worse knowing that if they kept accompanying Angel on his late night excursions, there time on this Earth was limited. It was either a jail cell or a wooden box. She wanted neither for them.
"Just walk away from this, Brian. Don't end up like the rest of us."

Brian looked into her eyes and saw the real concern. How could this girl possibly lead a gang? "I don't know if I can." He whispered. "We made more money that night than I do in a month. The only other way is to win races. But sometimes you loose and there goes the rent. Seems a bit enticing." He leaned back relaxing a bit. It was true. He was good at this. That's why the Feds recruited him. "Can you get in touch with him and tell him that I might be interested in making some more cash...maybe without having to shoot somebody? I"d like to leave my brother out of this though."

"Do you really wanna do something just because of the money? Don't you think you should atleast like being bad a little bit?" She asked.
Amira weighed the options in her head. She could pull some strings for Brian, but if anything happened to him... it would be on her hands. "I can talk to Angel if he ever resurfaces again. And as for Jack, I'm glad you're not dragging him into this. I don't know if he'll be able to keep up with Angel."
She watched as Brian began to relax and took that as a good sign. "How far are you willing to go, Brian? Angel's not gonna have you fax and collate for him. He's gonna need you to prove yourself," she said. She knew that Angel wasn't just gonna open up the doors for him and make room for him at the dinner table. Brian was gonna have to fight his way to the top- just like the rest of them.

Brian ran his hands trough his hair. This was good. Amira wasn't completely opposed to the idea of letting him into the gang. He smirked a somewhat sour smirk. "I think I've already earned my spurrs. The guys at the warehouse weren't exactly thrilled by the idea of handing over the money. I think Angel could tell that I could help him out quite a bit." In fact Brian was surprised that Angel never questioned why Brian was so good with a gun. Before Amira could get any doubts he explained. "I joined the Army when I was 18. Can't say that I disliked shooting and fighting. So I kind of like the idea of making use of my skills every now and then. Why not earn some cash that way." Brian knew it was a bunch of crap and he had no idea whether Amira would buy his story. Maybe he needed to get some tattoes and a goatie to be more beleivable. "What exactly would I have to do?" He needed to find out how much Amira really was involved or knew without being too obvious.

Amira scrunched her face up together and pondered his response. It seemed to flow out too easily, but it sounded honest. He was being honest- he admitted to actually enjoying the shooting and the fighting. Maybe, just maybe.... He would make it.
She shrugged. "Like I said, I don't know what it is that Angel does exactly, but I've heard rumors. That him and his crew hold up other gangs for money or they rob them and sell what they can. That maybe they're more than just a lowlife street crew. Some have even gone as far as to say that they act like a organized crime. How much of that is true... I can't say."
She pictured them in a scene that would resemble something out of the Godfather. Amira smirked to herself. She, of course, would be Michael. Angel won't settle less for anything then Sonny for he was always trying to go out with a big bang. And Brian... where would he fit into all of this? If Angel was her right hand.... where did that leave Brian?
Her mind began to play out all sorts of scenes, but the only one that played the loudest was the one she knew would be the least likely to come true. What if Brian overthrew Angel? What if Brian proved to be better than her dark guardian angel? What if?
Amira shook her head, trying to clear it of the silly little stories she was trying to convince herself would be entertaining. She knew that in order for Brian to climb up the ranks and take Angel's place, blood would have to be shed. And this was something she wanted no part in.
But the idea did entertain her. It made a part of her giddy. Angel was starting to act up. He was disobeying orders and hiding out from her. What if she gave Brian the chance he wanted? What if she guided him up the ranks? High enough to annoy Angel and make him get his shit together.
So she planted a seed. One that would hopefully grow into a beautiful, thorn spiked rose.
"He'll test you, Brian. Try to intimidate you and prove that you are not man enough to be a part of his crew. You have to show him that you want this and that you are more than capable to do the job. You have to challenge him."

Her words intimidated him. He would not let it show though. From the very first moment he started working for the police back when he was 19 he had made it his goal to prevent crime and get the bad guys off the streets. Of course, being a cop meant an exciting, thrilling lifestyle...just on the right side of the law. Now he wasn't so sure anymore whether he was still on the right side. He had crossed that fine line a couple of times. Who knew where Amira's 'crew' as she called it would lead him. Brian glanced up at her. He noticed how she avoided the word gang. For a moment he hestitated. On purpose. He didn't want to seem too self assured. "I'm up for a challenge." His thumbs nervously hit the wood of the table they were sitting on while he wondered whether Amira really knew as little as she said. Brian didn't quite buy it. What he started beleiving though was that she might not be the leader of the gang or crew after all. "What do you think he will have me do? I'd like to come prepared!" He hoped sincerely it wasn't shooting somebody. The sight of Angel executing one of his crew members replayed in his mind and sent cold shivers down his back. His pale blue eyes came up from his hands to meet her warm, brown ones again. Could these be the eyes of a dangerous woman? She sure seemed wild but dangerous? No.

"I'm guessing armed robbery. That's what he's mostly known for. And every so often I here about a murder here and there," she said. Amira tried to make her statement come out sarcastically, trying to judge Brian's reaction. So far he was nothing but cool. So far he had her vote.
She glanced at her watch and then looked back up at Brian. "I'll keep trying to reach out to him, but I'll most likely have to show up at his mother's house when he's asleep. It'll be the only way so he doesn't manage to avoid me."
Amira leaned into Brian and stared intensely into his eyes. "I hope you know what you're doing, Brian. Your greed is placing you and your family right in the line of fire. Please be careful and keep me in the loop. If anything should happen to you, I would be the one to blame," she added, sadly.
Part of her wanted to yell out and tell him to run the other way. Part of her forced her to keep her mouth shut. She sighed and stood up slowly from the table, keeping her eyes trained on him. "Say hi to Jack for me," she whispered, before beginning to walk away.

It looked like he was doing his job well. Deception. He was good at his job. Sometimes this talent worked to his advantage. Sometime it bit him in the ass. He hoped that getting into Amiras gang would be one of the former.
When she got close to him and mentioned about putting his family at risk, Mia immediately came to his mind and he could feel cold shivers running down his back. He blinked and backed away almost unnoticably. For a moment Amira had him question his own actions. Was it really a good idea to get mixed up with Angel, Amira and their gang? He had witnessed what the man was capable of. Amira's words had a calming effect on him though. It seemed like she wanted to look out for him.
'Brian nodded and mumbled. "Thanks. I'll wait for his call." Then he watched her slender figure walk away. How could such a sexy woman be so bad...or maybe he should ask himself: how couldn't she possibly be bad?
