Getting off that ship from Japan was one of the greatest reliefs Cole ever experienced. Truth was, they had done it, they had proved Brian's innocence-for the most part-and managed to escape with their lives in the process. The biggest challenge now was to get back on track with life...whatever that means.
As they waited for their cars to be unloaded, Cole asked Brian. "Any idea where we can bunk for the time being?" After thinking for a couple seconds, Cole suddenly remembered his half-brother. "Actually, I have a relative who owns a garage here." He offered.

The passage back had been nothing but tiring. In fact the whole experience of being on the run had been scary and wore him down like no other experience before. Brian had expected the greatest relief by setting foot back on American soil and not being on the run anymore but the fact that the 'small charge' of assault was still up in the air and he had to be on trial for it worried him a great deal and put a big, fat smudge on the happy arrival home. "I have a brother in California, or at least that's where he used to live...then there's Mia but I'm pretty sure she doesn't want to see me." He thought out loud. "Let's get the papers cleared and a bite to eat. I'm starving."

"Mia? That dark haired chick back in Tokyo? How'd you make her hate you?" Cole shook his head. "Man, you have a habit of making enemies." Cole thought he remembered something mentioned a couple months ago about this 'Jack' that was Brian's brother...and from what he remembered, Brian had reservations about him. 'That's a brilliant idea.' He joked to himself. Cole watched his GTR and Silvia rolled off the ship. "Yeah, I'm with you on that, food on cargo ships sucks."

Brian's eyes were trained on the cars while he absentmindedly folded the papers and then unfolded them in his hands. "Mia and I used to date....she wasn't happy to find out I'm with Mira now." Brian explained with a bit of regret. He never wanted to hurt any of the girls but ended up making both of them miserable.
Shoveling his feet he added. "I'll give my brother a call. It's better than sleeping on the streets."
Together with Cole he walked to the customs office and got the papers stamped, then proceeded to the cars. "First fast food joint we find." With that he stretched out his hand for Cole to hand over the keys.

Cole took the keys to his two cars and thanked the officer at the desk. "Figures, I'm sure she was even more thrilled once she saw the pregnancy." He laughed. "Speaking of Mira, where is she?" Cole singled out the keys for the R35. "Deal, better not be a Jack in the Box though." He tossed the keys for the GTR to Brian. "Knock youself out."
At the fast food joint, Cole got a burger and a malt. "Damn I missed these chocolate malts." He took a long sip of it. "So whats our plan, besides crashing your bro's pad?"

"Mira's with a friend for now. She took the plane just to make sure she's not having the baby on the ship." Behind them her father stepped of the vessel. The agent had to accompany them together with the retrieved cars. Plus legally Brian was not yet free to go where ever he pleased since he was still awaiting trial. He caught the keys in midair, which instantly put a smile on his face. Having American soil under his feet had never felt as good before and the keys of the GTR in his hand meant freedom, if only for a few seconds.
The drive to the Burger place was short but fun and good old American Fast Food more delicious than any Tepanyaki or Sushi could ever be. Brian ordered two large burgers, fries and snapple and ate like he hadn't had any food in days. The mass of beef made him feel slightly sick but very satisfied.
He then went to a public phone and dialed his brother number hoping he'd pick up. Unfortunately they were't that lucky so he left a message. "Hey bro, it's me- Brian. I'm back in the States and need a place to stay for a night or two. I'm heading up your way...so better be home in the evening. Bye."
Then he dialled the number Mira had given him just to get another answering machine. "Hey baby, we've just arrived and had a bite to eat. Everything's okay, I hope you're doing fine as well. I'll call you again in an hour or so, so ...love you." He hung up and stared at the wall for a moment because he had really hoped to talk to her in person instead of the machine because it had been two days since the last harbor and the last call.
When he came back he pulled of his hoodie because California surely was warmer than the Pacific. "The plan is to ...have some fun for a change!" He smirked and jingled Cole's keys. "What do you say?"

Cole's eyes widened a little. "She's that close?! Well, you're gonna have a major change in lifestyle pretty soon then." He laughed. The thought of Brian being a dad hadn't really registered with him yet, he couldn't imagine a child being brought up in any kind of a situation they've been in lately. For now they had some down time...at least he hoped so.
As Brian was busy throwing quarters at the payphone, Cole silently debated whether staying at Brian's brother's place was a good idea. Cole hardly knew the guy after all, in fact, he wouldn't be able to put a face to the name. But on the other hand, what choice did he have? Brian soon came back, tossing the GTR keys in his hand. "If you're thinking what I think you're thinking, then hell yeah. We need some dollars anyway." He smiled.

For a short moment Brian was confused as to what Cole meant, then his heart jumped a little and his mind told him to lay low since he was still awaiting his trial and getting busted for street racing probably wouldn't work in his favor. "I was actually just think about a little fun, one on one but if you find anybody in here who wants to race you or me for cash, why not." He looked around and singled out possible candidates, then let his gaze wander through the window at the cars parked outside: All of them were family vehicles or trucks. Raising he brows he shook his head. "Let's check the truck stop, might be luckier there....I'll race you there." His fingers were twitching as a smile crept up on his face...how long had it been.
"Just make sure you don't roll the damn thing this time!" He made an awkward joke and raised his hands. "Just kidding!"
Sure enough only 5 minutes later the rolled onto the highway and pushed the pedal to the metal having some fun and looking for possible competitors.

"Fun to me is competition, Brian." Cole grinned and looked over his two cars again. "Besides, this is California, we made our names here. There's always racing around the block here." Cole wondered if Hobbs was still watching them or not, that was his only concern about doing anything illegal. Leading Hobbs straight to a scene wouldn't help anybody's cause. Nonetheless, he put those worries aside and unlocked the Silvia. "Alright, but you better be sitting in a rocking chair drinking coffee by the time I get there, my GTR is a purpose built racer, the Silvia is a purpose built work in progress." He laughed and got in the driver's seat.
On the highway, Cole's predictment was coming true. Trying to keep up with Brian in the GTR was like trying to keep up with Michael Phelps in the swimming pool. However, he was quite proud of the monster machine he had built. That car was almost impossible to beat.
As they finally rolled into the closest truck stop, luck apparently was on their side, 10-12 tuned sports cars lined the far end of the parking lot. What else could it be besides a showing? Cole thought.

Brian couldn't help the smile that crept up on his face when he saw the modified imports mixed with the odd American muscle car. "Oh, good old Cali!" He exclaimed when he pulled up close to them and climbed out of the driver seat. He half expected Cole to ask for a change of keys since he probably wanted to have some fun himself. It had been easy to leave the young guy in the dust with a car like the RX.
The group was mingling around one popped hood so Brian nodded at Cole to join him and slowly walked up behind them. "Busted some piston rings?" Some of them turned to take note of the two newcomers. "What's up guys?" Brian added. "What do you know?" One of the younger Mexican guys asked him raising his chin. "A thing or two." Brian commented and went straight to the point. "Like that me and my buddy here can easily beat the owner of this lame Acura!" Insults always did the trick!

Cole stepped out of the Silvia with as much swag as possible. He thought he could detect a little worry from the fools with their riced out integras and civics. "Next time, I get the GTR." Cole nudged Brian with a grin on his face.
Cole let Brian handle all the trash talk while he silently checked out the cars. Arguably the nicest one there was a blue Acura NSX...and of course that's the car Brian was calling out. Next to the Acura NSX was a Honda NSX with a matching paint job. "A crew." Cole said to himself. He was rattled out of his gaze when he heard an angry response from the Hispanic that owned the Acura. "I say you dunno shit, and you and you're boyfriend here are about to eat shit!" He ripped out his keys and dangled them in Brian's face. Cole then saw him motion over to his buddy who he presumed owned the Honda NSX.

Some people's buttons were just to easy to push Brian thought to himself while keeping a straight face. He knew the cars weren't bad but had the confidence than him and Cole could beat just about anybody on the parking lot. "Me and my boyfriend..." he reached behind Cole's neck to pull him a little closer. "would bet a two hundred bucks a piece that we can make it back here faster than any of you...one time up to the next exit and back her on the small road that runs next to the high way...what do you say?" He jingled his own keys in reply.

Cole rolled his eyes when Brian got cozy with him. He had enough of a scar from back in Panama...although Brian did sort of save his ass by his acting back there. Cole liked Brian's purposed layout. That was about 1/2 of a mile on the freeway, then a semi-twisty road on the way back.
The Mexican encroached on Brian's space and met face to face. "200? I say 500 each, tag team style." He pointed to his teammate by the Honda. "Prepare to lose, chica." He challenged.
Cole whispered to Brian. "He just called you a girl, bro." Cole then pulled back and did his own talking. "Starting line is over there, hope you two realize what you're getting into." He grinned. He then turned to Brian. "Alright, they said tag team style. I say you go first since you'll have the fastest car and AWD so you can get the lead off the line. Make sure you open up a big gap, I'm not that confident that my Silvia can take those NSX's." He sighed.

"And here I was thinking these two are the girls." Brian motioned for the Mexicans and laughed at Cole. There was actually no need to piss them off more now that they bought into the race. Hopefully they could really take em both because Brian had next to no money on him.
"Let's roll, baby." He told Cole with a nod and walked toward his car. Once inside he wondered what he had gotten his young friend into. Could the 'project' car really win a race? It was too late now so he buckled up and turned the key.
Moments later teh cars lines up at the on ramp of the highway. Brian was focussed. he wasn't one for big gestures once the race was about to start. Instead he had one hand on the wheel, one on the clutch and his foot was hovering over the gaspedal while the other pressed down on the clutch. One of the men's buddy's lifted his arm up in the air to start the race.
Already adrenalin was starting to rush through Brian's veins enabling him to fly off as soon as that arm dropped. He took the lead right away while the Mexican's wheels spun out allowing Brian a slight headstart.
They flew down the on ramp. Now it was a matter of who'd be lucky enough to weave in in front or behind a truck because the highway was fairly busy right now. When Brian reached the highway a bus was blocking the first lane but instead of letting him pass he exelarated and simply kept driving on the emergency lane to get in front of the bus. Some kids inside immediately saw the roaring flash and were glued to the window.

Cole's confidence mainly depended on how far ahead that red GTR would be when it came back into sight. He believed he was going to need a fairly significant head start to have a comfortable win, but truth be know, he had no idea what those NSX's were packing.
His competitor kept trying to get his attention with taunting gestures, but Cole simply ignored his immaturity and got focused on what he had to do. After all, Brian was counting on him. Soon, he saw the GTR appearing on the horizon. It was ahead, but he couldn't tell how much. He put the car in 1st and got the pedal feel he wanted. "Come on Brian."

The race was a little bumpy with so many other cars on the highway but Brian knew his shit and weaved in and out as fast as he could. The traffic worked in his favor giving him a good lead but he almost missed the turn off so he had to pull hard on the wheel, which made making the back tires loose traction for a moment. The back came around but almost hit a guard rail. Cole would have had his head because 500 bucks wouldn't cover that sort of damage. "Damn" he muttered underneath his breath because he lost a good bit of his lead and had to do his best not to give it up on the way back on the dirt road. Thanks to the awd he did quite well. Cole came in sight so he geared down once more to give it all. When he passed the mark and Cole shot off he wasn't quite sure whether his lead would be enough for the younger one to go home victorious. He got out and immediately search for Cole on the horizon instead of paying attention to the other driver who was ranting. "I almost had you, it was this close." "Almost doesn't count, bro." Was the only flat statement leaving his lips.

Once Cole saw the lead Brian had, he got nervous, Brian had 7-8 car lengths on him at best. He was gonna have to drive his ass off to close the deal. Cole stood on the gas revving the engine to redline waiting for the second Brian crossed the drawn line. When those front tires hit it, Cole dumped the clutch and left a smokey trail after his car. He checked his mirror to see the one NSX cross the line and the other take off after him. "Come at me, bro!" Cole challenged. The highway was more challenging than Cole expected. But surprisingly, the Silvia's drifting nature made it rather easy to cut threw the traffic without getting held up to much, and although holding on to the back of the car was challenging, Cole managed to hold the NSX where he was and the gap between the cars remained the same. On the freeway exit, he downshifted to second and lightly engaged the ebrake to rotate the rear, the car did a small drift but straightened out quickly enough to get a good exit off from the freeway exit to the back road. The NSX looked about 5-6 car lengths away, but so far things were going well enough. However, once Cole realized how much dirt was one the back road, he face grew a grim expression. His car slid enough, dirt wasn't going to be fun. Nevertheless, his best bet was to keep his foot in it and try to anticipate the car's reactions. Another look in his mirror showed the NSX was closing, and soon he was right on his bumper. "Shit." Cole muttered, his hands were so busy on the wheel though that he really didn't have time to worry. Making the bumper of his Silvia as big as possible, the NSX couldn't find a line by, and finally they got back on the final pavement stretch to the finish line. Cole gained everything he could on that last corner and managed to put a car length between him and the NSX. However, he knew the NSX had more horsepower. He was going to have to block the shit out of him. Cole basically mirror drove and placed his car wherever the NSX was coming. This made the Mexican angry, and he started ramming the back of the Silvia. Cole just about lost total control but held on and cut across the NSX again. "Damn!" The NSX was relentless and kept pounding the rear of the Silvia, it was a just a few more hundred yards to the finish line, he just had to hold on for that long. The NSX went to right and got just enough of his fender on the Silvia's quarter panel. The Hispanic violently turned into the Silvia in a final attempt to spin Cole out. But, Cole anticipated his move the moment he saw the NSX go to the right. He caught the spin quickly enough just to cross the line barely in front of the NSX, but then totally lost control of the car and went for a ride that ended in the ditch, luckily still on all fours.
Cole let out a huge sigh that he had been holding pretty much the whole race. And then cheered, knowing he won it...barely.

The race was breathtaking because Cole depended much more on his racing skills than hp and performance of his car. Brian found himself staring and the bumper to bumper finish in awe breathing a sigh of relief when Cole managed to finish first. He ran over to his friend cheering loudly. "Good job. I knew you could do it, kiddo." He clapped him on the shoulder just to turn around and stride over to the Mexicans, who weren't very happy with the outcome. "You blocked me out." The guy complained but Brian just laughed. "Yeah, that's how it's done. " he held out his hand for the money but the men just crossed their arms in front of their chests. "Really? You're not only bad drivers but also bad loosers? Are you sure that this is a clever move?" A few of their friends were starting to step up behind them.

Cole eased the Silvia out of the ditch, making sure not to tear any body work off, and arrived by an ecstatic Brian. "Thanks, you too. What will I have to do for you to stop calling me kiddo?" He laughed. The Mexican mob was becoming just that, a mob. "And you spun me out, so we're even." He responded to the idiot complaining about the blocks. "I bet your car has another 200 horse than mine, that should've been an easy victory for you." He figured his taunting didn't help their cause, but he couldn't resist.

The Mexican raised his chin not pleased with bot blonde boys attitude. He answered in a commanding tone while his mob backed him up. "I say: Race not fair, no money." Brian stepped closer to him letting him know that he wasn't intimidated by him and his buddies. "You lost. That's what racing is...hand over the cash." Now the Mexican closed the rest of the distance so he came face to face with Brian and Cole. He was a bit shorter than Brian but gutsier. "Make me." Brian shot Cole a look out of the corner of his eye. Was it worth getting into a fight over this?
