Angel's heart skipped a beat as he inhaled that familiar scent. She had been missing in action for the last month or so, but it was still fresh in his memory. He groaned as he shifted in bed, letting his eyes adjust to the bright sunlight coming in through the open curtains.
When his eyes finally cleared, he was finally able to drink her in. He found Amira sitting on the top of his dresser, clad in her usual skinny jeans and heels. He didn't even bother to wonder how she gotten into his house, she was practically like family and most likely had her own set of keys.
"Nice of you to drop by," he said, sarcastically. Angel sat up in bed, mentally preparing himself for the shit storm that was sure to come.

She crossed her legs and bounced the bag of frozen peas his mother had handed to her, from hand to hand. Amira smirked, as she threw the bag of frozen peas at him, aiming for his chest. She instantly knew why his mother had sent them up there with him- on his bare chest he was sporting a large bruise. She recognized it as a full on gunshot bruise courtesy of a bullet proof vest.
Amira jumped off the dresser and began to pace the room. She didn't know where to begin. She was pissed off that he had dragged Brian and Jack into all of this. She was mad that he had been avoiding her. She was even madder that he had been meddling in her new life.
Her life. All she wanted was to put distance between him and her. She wanted her own life. Free of drive-by shootings. Murder. Gun toting friendships. She wanted to be free of it all.
"How dare you? I thought you were my friend, Angel. I thought I could trust you not to interfere with what I do in my personal life. And on top of it all, you made Brian and Jack help you out. They had no business in what we do," she yelled.
She stopped pacing, her chest rapidly rising and falling. Amira stared at him intently, hoping he was getting the message loud and clear.

Angel considered the many thoughts running through his head and decided not to voice them all. Even though him and Ami had grown up together and at one time he even considered that there could be more then friendship between the two of them, he knew she was the boss. One word from her and he would be shot or worse. Did he really wanna test their relationship?
He listened to her rant and rave about what he had done, but never once did she address what she had done. She had abandoned him and his crew. He thought they were family. Clearly, he was wrong.
"I was following orders. I'm supposed to be watching your back and how can I? You're running all over town, going to races and God knows what else. What am I supposed to tell your brother? I had to drag them in and keep them close. Something goes wrong its all on me. Your brother will take permanent residence in my ass if something happens to you," he replied.
He knew he had a lot more to say, but for now he was content with calming her down enough to save his ass."Plus, I got you the money you needed. Now you can stop living on Hector's couch and go represent the crew as you should be."

"My brother gave you orders? He left me in charge, Angel! So that means that as much as you don't like it- I'm in charge! You follow my orders and one of them sure as hell wasn't to drag Jack and Brian into those warehouses with you!"
Ami knew that she could yell and fight with him all she wanted but it wouldn't be of any use. Angel was as loyal as they came and he would follow her brother and her into hell if necessary. She knew he was only looking out for her and as much as she loved him for acting like her older brother- he wasn't.
"That's the problem, Angel. I am not trying to represent anything. I am trying to find something else other than this miserable, sad excuse of a life that I have inherited. Not by choice! No one never bothered to ask me if I wanted to take over for my brother. I was just shoved into his shoes and told to make sure everything didn't go to shit. Well it hasn't and I'm good at what I do, but its not what I want to do. I want my own life!"
Amira measured her words carefully, knowing that what she really meant was that she didn't want any of them in her life anymore. She didn't want people looking at her for orders or with fear in their eyes.
All she wanted was peace and quiet. Maybe a dog to walk. Bills to pay. A house to clean. Hell, maybe even some kids to annoy the hell out of her. All she wanted was something to call her own.
Not hand-me-downs from her brother.

Angel didn't know how the hell he climbed out of bed that fast, but he did. And he got in her face.
"Oh, you want your own life now, huh? Go! Be free. Go live your wonderful life with those two blue eyed blond bitches! Leave the ones that have gotten their hands dirty with blood for you behind. Abandon them and save yourself!" He yelled.
"You think I don't want the same things too? You think I don't know that at the end of it all I'm gonna end up in the jail cell next to your brother or in the cemetary next to him? Well things aren't easy on me either. I have people depending on me to follow your stupid orders! You were handed an opportunity to make money without getting any blood on those ridiculous Jimmy Choos you wear, while I have to go out and kill for the next meal my family eats."
Angel grabbed her and dragged her in front of the mirror, forcing her to look at herself. "There's a big difference between me and you, Amira. You might wanna turn your back on us and walk away from it all, but every time you look in the mirror you'll see all those people you had killed to buy you those pretty little diamonds you love to wear. You might wanna humble yourself but its not gonna stop the nightmares, trust me. I should know," he whispered into her ear.
He took a step back and watched her as she looked at herself in the mirror. "I sleep at night because I know that this is how my family gets to live another week. You always had your brother to take care of you. And now its your turn to take care of everyone else. So get off of your little high horse and get back to the basics. Stop all this nonsense about getting a life. This is all you know and ever will!"

Amira stared at herself in the mirror. He was right. This was everything she knew and will ever know. Even though she tried her hardest to put them all behind her, there was a little voice in the back of her head that kept pushing her to do bad things. For instance, at the races with Vince's sister. All she wanted to do was to grab the girl and make her suffer. Why? The girl did nothing wrong, Amira was just jealous of her good looks.
She watched in the mirror as Angel sat down on the edge of the bed, shaking his head softly. She turned towards him, leaning against the dresser and deciding her next move. "I'm sorry you feel like I've been neglecting you and the crew. It's true. I haven't been around much but that's gonna change," she said.
Amira needed to learn how to balance things better. Between her job at the tattoo parlor and looking for a half decent apartment, she hadn't bothered to check in with Angel. She was caught up in creating her own identity that she had been forgetting about her main responsibility- her brother.
"I'm gonna need to learn how to balance my personal, work and family life a little better. It's just gonna take some time to get used to, but that still doesn't excuse you for what you did. By dragging Brian and Jack into our business, you made us vulnerable, and now Brian wants in. If you don't let him play in the sandbox, he might snitch, and if you do, you might lead him straight to me."
She cocked her head to the side and tapped the end of her shoe on the floor. "Your main priority is to protect me. Make sure Brian doesn't get any wind of who I am or how major this game we're playing is. Put aside all your bullshit and do your job."
Amira knew she was playing with fire. Dismissing Angel and drawing the conversation back to Brian. She could easily piss him off and make him do something crazy, but honestly she didn't care. She was tired of having people control her life. If she was supposedly in charge, then Angel should be able to deal with her decisions.
She only hoped he wouldn't fly off the handle and take them all down with him.

Angel sighed. She was like a dog with a bone. She kept dragging the conversation back to Brian and Jack, but she was right. They knew too much already. The only way to protect themselves was to bring them in a bit more.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
What if Brian was shot down by a rival crew? What if Brian mysteriously went missing and it turned out he robbed them and skipped town? So many possibilities.
Amira was currently busy with setting up her own life. She wouldn't be looking in on them that much. All he had to do was make sure that she thought he was following her orders. It was nothing he hadn't done before. He just had to find somebody to take the rap for it.
Angel had time on his hands. Time to make it seem like him and Brian were the best of friends. Time to plan. Time to find a scapegoat. Time to protect himself and his crew. Time to plot and scheme.
"Fine, Amira. Have it your way. You're in charge. That's what you wanted to hear, right? You're in charge," he said. He stood up and rolled out his neck, hearing the joints pop and sound out through the room.
"I'll track Brian down and show him how nice I can be. Now do you mind? I would like to take a shower and get started on my day," he said through gritted teeth.

Amira nodded and felt her chest puff out with a strange feeling of accomplishment. She exited Angel's room, a small smile on her face. She had finally reeled him in and made him promise to do what she wanted.
She descended down the stairs, heading into the kitchen. She found his mother at the kitchen table, wiping it down. "You never come visit any more, mi hija. No wonder he's acting all cranky around here," she said, her voice heavily laced with her spanish accent.
"Sorry, mama. I've just been busy with this new job I started. But I already spoke to him about it. I'm gonna try my hardest to be around more," Amira replied. Even though they had never explicitly discussed it, Angel's mother knew about the company they kept. Over the years and the gun shot wounds and what not, she simply accepted the life they led and even began to embrace it.
Angel's mother chuckled and finished wiping down the table, as Amira leaned against the kitchen doorway and watched her. "Well you better get it together, Ami. He brought someone home the other night. Even introduced her to Alex. Looks like he's serious about this one," she said.
Amira felt a pang of jealousy in the bottom of her stomach. Even though Angel and her had never had a serious relationship, for the longest time he had only had eyes for her. The fact that he had moved on to someone else did not sit right with her.
"What? Who is she?" Amira blurted out. She caught herself before she let out any more questions. She realized her questions were probably coming out in a panic. His mother turned towards her and smiled.
"She's a nice girl, Amira. Real pretty. I like her and I think you will too. It's just a matter of time before he introduces you to her, seeing as you are best friends," she said.
Amira huffed and shook her head slowly. His mother was really out of the loop. Ever since her brother had been locked up and she had taken over for him, the relationship between her and Angel had changed drastically.
They were no longer best friends or lovers. She was now the boss and he was just another one of her henchmen. They were playing different roles now.
They were different.
Amira cleared her throat and nodded at his mother. "Well I have to get back to work," she said, turning on her heel and walking away. She didn't bother to wait for a response as she quickly exited the house and headed towards some place quiet.
Where she could think about and process all the emotions running through her right now.
