When a glance in the rear view mirror revealed another set of flashing lights, Piper swore under her breath. With Brian's car shooting ahead a bit, it quickly became obvious that the cops were going to be persistent about catching someone. Since she wasn't of a mind to be that person, the blond quickly took in her options before twisting the wheel in the opposite direction of the other driver at the next turn. This left the cops with two options. One to split up and one follow both of them or two, stay together and pick one person to pen their hopes on.
It seemed the cops both wanted to be heros though as they split apart at the same turn and she and O'Conner were both left with one cop a piece to deal with. Happy Happy Joy Joy, right?
Having been in this boat before, the blond shook her head and hit the gas once more, spying a light going yellow up ahead. Smirking, she flew through the intersection just as it flipped to red. As the traffic started up behind her, she smirked as the cop had to swerve quickly in order to miss an oncoming car only to plow up on the curb and smash into a light pole. Well, that was easy, she thought to herself even as she made a get away, only slowing once she hit familiar turf and the sounds of pursuit where far behind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Meanwhile
"Keep after the BMW!" snarled the potbellied officer in the passenger seat even as the rookie spun the wheel in the opposite direction of the Charger. Mentally, the younger man was wishing the fat slob would stuff a donut in his mouth or something but he figured saying that would only get him in trouble.
"I am already!" he retorted, cursing the patrol car that wasn't made for handling like the car ahead was. If he had his own vehicle, he might have had a prayer at catching the racer in front of them but as it stood, the Crown Vic was barely keeping up as it bottomed out on potholes in the street. "Why don't you do something useful and try to get the number of the plates on that car?"
Cussing under his breath as another bump cause the lid to his coffee to come off and the passengers lap to end up soaked with hot liquid, the other patrolman gave him a dirty look before reaching for the CB.
Piper took a turn, so did one of the police cars to follow her. "You're on your own, sweety." brian remarked hoping she'd be okay.
With only one car on his tail Brian smirked into the rear view mirror. The guy didn't stand a chance. Not against the BMW nor his driver. Turn after turn the bMW proved what it was made for: Narrow, winding roads. It handled perfectly throught the turns while his follower was sliding around each corner knocking over trash cans and hitting curbs here and there. With every turn the distance became larger until they hit an open stretch. Brian floored it showing off the full potential of the engine while manouvering around the odd car that was out late at night. A look in the rear view mirror confirmed. He'd almost lost them.
Quite frankly, Cole had other things on his mind besides outright speed, like where the hell he was going. He knew that dirt road led to this highway, what he neglected to ask was where this highway led, and where were the safe exits. This cop ambush was too coordinated for his liking, it was an indication that the police had traps set up around the area. Shawn on the other hand apparently decided to hell with directions, speed solves everything. Cole watched with one eye as he blazed ahead, his other eye looking out for signs of a reliable exit. Soon enough though, that cop car caught up a little too close for his liking, and so he opened up the CCXR once more to pull away. If all else failed, he could probably just put the pedal down and hope the highway continued for awhile, no cop was gonna hang with a supercar capable of well over 200 mph.
He aimed his car behind Shawn's, who was quite a ways in front at this point, and noted his erratic driving. Suddenly his erratic driving became downright insanity as the Challenger pulled a tight 180 right in front of a truck. Cole cringed as he half expected the truck to mow over the car, but instead tried a maneuver that was simply not possible for an 18-wheeler. Cole suddenly realized what the fate of that truck was as he came up on it way too fast. "Damnit Shawn!" He exclaimed as he ripped the supercar hard right to avoid the tipping truck. As a result, the car went into a 4 wheel skid as the driver miraculously missed the back of the truck by maybe a foot. The right sides of the exotic dipped into the ditch before the blonde caught the slide and straightened the car out. He caught another gear and put the gas pedal down, hoping the cop wasn't as ambitious. The Koenigsegg reached the Challenger as it came back up to speed and Cole passed by real close to send his own opinion of that stunt. "Fuckin' nutjob". He said with a quick chuckle.
What unfolded in front of their eyes looked like out of some crazy ass car movie. Both cops gasped while the driver slammed hard on the breaks. Even under these circumstances he wasn't allowed to risk both of their lives or the vehicle. Nobody would thank him for that. Duty however made them park their car in the emergency lane and run over to the tipped over truck to help the driver out before some other car would plow into the driver cabin and kill the man.
As soon as they had rescued the injured man they radioed in their position and drove back to make other cares aware of the hazard they were coming up on.
Dispatch told them that another car was on the way but both knew that nobody stood a chance against drivers and cars like that. "Did you see what that one guys did?" The female officer asked wrinkling her brow. "Yeah! If we're lucky they take the exit at Garden Grove...they'll be in for a nice surprise."
Shawn couldn't see what was going on, technically in front of him, because he was too busy looking in all his mirrors to see where he was going, but what he did see was that Cole had made it and was now catching up to him. When Shawn finally straightened out his ride and was driving like a normal person, he could see the Koenisegg coming up on him fast and finally getting along side of him. He rolled his window down while looking in his rear view mirror at the wreckage and smiled.
His smile never left his face and he only gave a soldiers salute to Cole in response. Guess some people didn't approve of his tactics but you had to admit, not only did it work, but it was hell of some driving right there. That was all skill there and Cole couldn't for one instance deny that. Looking back in his rear view mirror, he could see the squad car come to a screeching halt and pull over to help the poor truck driver out. He had a feeling they were in the clear of at least that squad car but it was probably best if they split up for the time being just to give the cops a run for their money. "What's your number? I think we should split up. I'll text you when the coast is clear. Then we can go get our money from Tess together." he called out as he exchanged words with Cole while they drove the highway.
Whether or not Cole gave him his number, he was taking the next exit which his GPS was already screaming at him to take. 'Next exit in five hundred feet.' He rolled up his window and cut over into the far right hand lane and cut off two other cars that were coming up on the exit as well. He rounded the clover leaf to get onto Garden grove but as he came around he saw two squad cars parked hood to hood with lights flashing. "Damn it! Road block." Without thinking twice, Shawn floored the v-8 supercharger and cut the wheel quick left. Without a seconds hesitation,the Challenger dodged the parked Five-O and tore through the grass terrain, sliding onto the highway with traffic coming at him. He dumped the clutch and gave it full brake to come to a stop as cars passed him on his right and left in order to dodge the Challenger. Giving a slight sigh of relief, Shawn looked back into his mirrors to see one of the squads emptying out, guns drawn and approaching his vehicle. "Dumb asses!" he said lifting the clutch and giving the Challenger full throttle while holding down the brakes. His tires spun out creating a thick cloud of white smoke behind his car from the tires peeling out. It wouldn't stop them, but it would blind them for a short as he heard the fatal gun shots start to ring out. Shawn ducked as one of the rounds hit the rear window, shattering it, before the tires finally gripped and caused him to fishtail forward.
"Here's hoping for the best." he said as the car straightened out and he started to drive against oncoming traffic."Catch me if you can, PIGS!"
The police braced themselves for the impact of the car flying towards them with their cars blocking the way. Instead the driver opted for the grass next to them and put some find driving on display in a desperate attempt to blind them and make his way out of there. It worked. To some extend at least as the dust he was kicking up made a clear shot impossible. "Did you get the plates?" One asked the other who only shook his head while jumping into the driver seat, backing away and spinning his car around to follow the crazy driver. "Not with me, muchacho." He said through gritted teeth while he followed the man into the oncoming traffic. No other cop would follow him here...nobody but him. Pressing down on the gas he quickly caught up since he was riding in the wake of the man's car who had to cut his way through heavy traffic until their bumpers almost connected. The next moment he lit him up making it perfectly clear that it was time to stop his vehicle through the speakers of the police car.
Shawn knew this wasn't going to be easy, but it wasn't going to be hard either unless he came across some psycho who wanted to play chicken with him and the Challenger. He was in L.A. after all and everyone knew they're were crazies living here, especially the cop that decided to follow him. the cars poured left and right like Moses parting the red sea and therefore the squad car soon caught up with no issues at all. Was Shawn really worried? Not in the least because he still had a few tricks up his sleeve. The only thing though, was that he didn't want to risk the lives of others in order to escape. He still held a certain duty and moral in this way of life he chose to live. The last thing he wanted was for vehicular homicide to be added to his rap sheet.
Shawn moved right and boarded the shoulder of the express lane, something he liked to call, riding the bonus lane. His driving was pristine though and never once had he scraped his car or ripped off the mirror doing this little maneuver in the past. However, he was going against traffic this time and his judgement may have been a little off due to sudden rush of things and actually having a cop worth chasing him this time around. So this time was more than definitely different than all the rest, so in an attempt to turn with the bend, He came a little too close and the large cement blocks separating traffic lanes, ripped off his side mirror and gave a good sized scrape across the Matte finish of the car. "Shit! That's gonna cost me.....This shit's getting too deep. We gotta make our way off this and on the other side baby." he said patting the dashboard of the Challenger. Once he found an opening, he took the hard left, crossing all three four lanes of traffic, causing cars to swerve to the left and the right. Some cars even freaked out, turning the wrong direction and in front of the currently following squad car.
Finally hitting the off ramp, technically the on ramp in this case, Again Shawn got too close to the steel guard rails in an attempt to miss hitting and oncoming car and now scrapped up the other side of his ride as well. "Son of a Fu...." he stopped as he had to control himself and took the first hard right with a decent drift to help him into the turn. The parking brake came up and then down as he gave the Challenger a decent amount of gas to aid him in the turn. Unfortunately,because he was wondering where and if the cop was still tailing him, he was paying too much attention to the rear view mirror to see a stopped garbage truck in front of him. He swerved quickly left and then right, but almost lost control of the car as he jumped the curb just a little. He regained control quickly and looked in his rear view mirror again to see if the cop was still behind him......
The man behind the wheel of the Challenger definetly knew what he was doing as he was part ofg the local street racing scene and drove accordingly. So did the cop though. He'd been trained for these situations when a special task force against street racing was formed and was eager to finally make use of his newly acquired skills. As long as he only had to follow the man on the emergency lane things were going smooth as it was fairly easy to stay on him. Suddenly there were cars spinning around and one even came towards him, which made the cop swirf onto the grass almost do a 180 himself. At the last second he regained controll of his vehicle. A deep frown was setting on his features. "This is getting serious. I hope the idiot doesn't get anyone killed!" His colleague finally rang in the plates to get an ID of the man while his partner followed him up and onramp at a distance. It was hard not too loose him now because there was little to no space with oncoming traffic. Sirens and horn were on to make people move out of the way.
"The vehicle is registered in the name of Shawn Rhodes." A calm voice announced over the speakers. "No outstanding warrants. Clean record."
The officer nodded as he geared down to catch up to the man and drifted around the corner using his e-brake just like the racer had done. "Get ready." he told his partner because Shawn was now close enough for them to try and shoot at his tires. Once there were no other cars close by his partner leaned out the window, took aim and shot. It took him 5 tries but the last one actually hit the back right tire.
Only a moment later The Callenger was riding on the rim and soon parts of the tire ripped off making it impossible for him to drive anymore.
With guns aimed at the car and its driver both police men got out. While one of them was approaching him the other covered him. "Get out of the car with your hands where I can see them. Slowly!" He commanded.
He drove straight after straightening the Challenger out but his eyes caught glimpse of the blue and reds trying to pierce through the tinted windows of the rear. He glanced out his side mirror and seen the cop car trailing up to him closely but this was not out of how fast the car was, this was because Shawn got cocky. He slowed down trying to play a game with the squad car behind him. He wanted to give them hope, he wanted to give them their moment of thinking about how they almost caught him. Once they got close, he downshifted and gave the Challenger some gas, pulling away from them. When he gained enough distance, he slowed down and did it again. He did this at least a half a dozen times, some on his own accord, some because obstacles seemed to jump into his path from out of nowhere. Either way, he was making it clearly known, he could have taken them on with very little to worry about.
On his last attempt to toy with the cops however, just before he was going to leave them in his dust, just before he was about to give the Challenger a shot of NOS,he had toyed with them too long. Now they were getting pissed and soon he could see the drivers partner hanging out the passenger window with a police issued pistol. One shot was fired and missed, the second one was fired and missed, but the third one hit the tail light on the right side of his car, shattering it as the red plastic spread across the pavement. Now instead of hitting the NOS, Shawn was forced to swerve in order to escape the deadly gun fire that was ringing out. Soon another shot rang out and he could hear the soft ting of the round deflecting off the moving alloy rim. This was getting too far out of hand and for what? A few street racers enjoying a night out? He hadn't even raced and broken any laws yet when they showed up, but then again, why did he run? Most likely because it was natural instinct, not too mention, if they delved deep enough, they would find his priors from a few years back. But even still, it was natural for street racers to run from cops, because even if they hadn't done anything wrong at the time, they were either going to or had already done something to get tossed behind bars. neither which was the case for Shawn, but he wasn't going to take any chances of being blamed or framed by L.A.P.D. either.
Finally the fifth shot rang out and he could hear the loud audible 'POP' from his rear tire being hit with the final round. His car swerved right from the sudden loss of air and he could hear the flapping of the torn rubber as it hit the pavement with each rotation. Compensating for the sudden pull the car was doing, he let off the gas and pulled over to keep his rims from getting anymore damaged then they probably already were. Rims were expensive, tires weren't. He was more pissed off at himself then anything because if he hadn't toyed with them and gone off pissing them off, guns would have never been involved in the first place. But as always, there was a bright side to this. His Lawyer was going to have a field day with this and this was gonna look good on his record to any street crew, especially if he got in with the Toretto's. Sure, they wouldn't particularly care for the fact he got caught, but if his records were ever pulled or word got out that Shawn was arrested, it would mean he wasn't some undercover cop or something. Wouldn't it? But then there was Brian too..... He played that off to where Dom would believe it or at least be more cautious to it so it wouldn't happen again....
Finally stopped and off on the side of the road, the red and blues pulled up behind him, his partner staying in the car partially as back up and a gun pointed at the drivers side while the driver came walking toward the Challenger and stopped half way. Typical police tactics and good enough to know if Shawn pulled anything, they wouldn't hesitate to shoot.
Shawn took off his seat belt, reached both hands out of the window and opened the car door from the outside and slowly removed himself from the vehicle. It's not like he hadn't done this before and he wasn't about to get shot, so it was best to show them he was coming out unarmed with both hands on the outside of the window. Once he was standing fully, his hands went behind his head and he bent over the trunk of his car to assume the position. Once one of the officers came to cuff him, he only spoke a few words, knowing damn well not to speak anything else that might be used against him in the court of law. Maybe it was nothing, maybe it was only a few words to piss the cops off more, depending on how they wanted to take it, but it was going to be the only words he would speak until his lawyer was present.
"Just do me a favor and take care of my ride. It better be in one piece when I get it out of the impound tomorrow." he said sarcastically. From here on out, they could do what they wanted to him because he wasn't going to fight them. That was going to be his lawyer's job.
It was clear that this guy had been in touch with the police before and was used to climbing out of his car with his hands behind his head. He was no stranger to the routine. Carefully the police officer who had been driving walked up to him, made sure there was no weapon by padding him down and then put him in hand cuffs. "You under arrest. You have the right to remain silent when questioned. Anything you say or do may be used against you in a court of law. (Modern readings have can and will in place of may) You have the right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police ......are you willing to answer my questions without an attorney present?" The officer rambled off all of Shawns Miranda rights, which he obviously already knew. "Just do me a favor and take care of my ride. It better be in one piece when I get it out of the impound tomorrow." was his only statement, which earned him a hard shove toward the police car from the second cop. "The way you've been driving I doubt you'll be able to distinguish between the damages you've done and anybody else." He smirk drawing some satisfaction from the look on the young racers face. "I doubt you'll be getting it out tomorrow...unless you're willing to give us some names and plates right away."
Then he was pushed into the back of the police car and driven to the station. "Suspect in custody, we're coming in." Both cops nodded at each other with satisfaction because they had not only managed to keep up with a street racer but shot out his tire, as well.
The station was so busy that Shawn was placed in a chair with his hands cuffed to the armrest for almost an hour before the officers actually had the time to talk to him. Finally the one who had caught him sat down at his desk and opened a file. "Do you have any ID?" He waited for a moment but then told him. "We can run your prints, too...do you have a record? Anything you want to tell me now? Sorry, I'm kind of busy and running after you took up a lot of my time so hurry up!" His tone was abrupt and unfriendly. He unlocked the handcuffs and reached for Shawns hand to press his fingers onto an ink pad and then on a form one by one. "Is this your first time, you have a run in with the police? We'd like to ask you a few questions and if you cooperate you might not even have to stay here over night."
