Inside the large building an evelvator took them to the 12th floor. Well dressed people with picture IDs on their suits and skirts were busy carrying files around, typing away at computers or discussing enourmosly important issues like how crappy the coffee from the machine was. Brian nodded to a few of his collegues while passing them by. He pointed at a seating area outside a room with large glass windows-the conference room. Inside a couple of people were waiting. Suddenly a small Asian looking woman took Brian by the arm and pulled him towards the room. "C'mon, you're late." Then she smiled at Jack and briefly held out her hand . "Hi, you must be Brian's brother. I'm agent Trinh." Brian nodded and said. "Get yourself one of those lousy coffees down the hall...I'm going to be in there!" With that he hurried into the meeting room and left Jack behind.

With all the suits around them, Jack felt kind of out of place in his simple jeans and shirt and thought that maybe it would have been better if he had waited outside. Something about people all dressed up just made him feel uncomfortable. But it was too late now. He shook the hand of the agent with a nod. "That'd be me" After Brian and the woman entered the conference room, Jack made his way to the coffee-machine and took his time deciding what he wanted. Not like there was much to choose from. Just hot water for thee or regular coffee. But with half an hour of nothing better to do, he had all the time in the world. Finally he decided to go with the coffee as he could use the caffeine. He took a sip, but immediately spat it back in the cup. This shit didn't even taste like coffee. "Jesus Brian, you were not kidding" He mumbled to himself and tossed the cup in the bin next to the machine letting out a sigh. Only 5 minutes had passed so far. After the unsuccessful coffee-ordeal, Jack sat down at the seating area. With an elbow leaning on the arm of the chair and his head resting in his hand, he started dozing off.

When Brian entered the room most seats were already filled. Besides his boss there were two unfamiliar faces at the end of the table. "Nice for you to join us O'Conner!" The older agent remarked. Brian mumbled his apology while he slumped down in an uncomfortable office chair and looked up at a picture of a man on one of the main flatscreens on the wall opposite of him. A bald, African American man with a impressively deep voice explained. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I'm Agent Rover. I'm with the illegal weapons and amunition department." Next to Brian Stasiak leaned closer and whispered. "Had to bail your brother out, right? Does that run in your family?" Ever since Brian broke his nose the guy seemed to harbor hard feelings against him. "None of your business." Brian shot back while keeping his eyes fixed on the man who was explaining. "Saltos." he pointed at the screen. "Has his fingers in all kinds of import and export businesses especially illegal weapons and amunition. That's why he got busted. The guy is actually in prison right now serving a 6 year sentence, which doesn't seem to stop him. His sister Amira seems to be his outside contact. We don't now how much she's involved-" He pressed a button and a photo of a extremely hot looking dark haired woman covered in tattoes and piercings appeared on the screen. Every agents eyes widened when they saw the picture and Brian couldn't help but whistle. Of course his friend Stasiak commented. "Don't get any ideas, O'Conner." "I think she's more your type."
The picture changed and showed a photo of Braga. "That's where you come in. I beleive you gentlemen know this guy since you were the ones, who brought him in. Unfortunately he seems to still be pulling some strings from his cell. We beleive he's connected to Saltos." When he saw the photo Brian's heart started beating a bit faster. Braga was the reason Letty was dead and Dom in prison plus Brian had spent a few days in the hospital. The Braga case had been the reunion with Dom's team with a very bitter aftertaste. He bit his lip and then asked. "What can we do?" "Get any information on Saltos, his sister and Braga. Get somebody on the inside. If we don't nail him before he distributes more we'll have world war 3 on the streets of LA with gangs blowing each other up soon." Out of the corner of his eye Brian saw his brother sitting outside half asleep. Then he focussed back on the information which was handed out on paper now.
20 minutes later Brian walked out a frown on his face. He nudged Jack who was asleep sitting up in a chair. "C'mon, let's go."

Nudging put an end to Jack's dreamless sleep. With a few blinks of his eyes he realized he was still at the seating area and Brian had appeared in front of him, being the one nudging him. Apparently it was time to go again. He stood up from the chair and rubbed a hand over his face, "Must have zoned out or something" His voice cracking a little. When he noticed the frown on his brother's face he added with a questioning look "Wow bro, who died?" The questioning look soon changed to a more worried look while he watched his brother. Brian's whole demeanor had changed, not just the frown on his face and Jack had no clue as to why. "Did I miss something?"

"I'll tell you on the way home." Brian grabbed a few things from his desk, shoved his gun in his holster under his jacket and rolled up the paper in his hand. Trinh asked. "You're heading out?" "Yeah. Give me a call if anything new comes up. I'll check out the race tonight and see if I can find out anything about this chick. They said she's driving a modified car-maybe she's into racing." He gave her a friendly slap while she gave him the usual. "Be careful. I'll keep you updated." Turning to Jack she added. "Bye, Jack. Nice meeting you." Brian liked her. Trinh always had his back, she was more than just a colleague. More like a friend or maybe little sister.
Soon they were crossing town at a more civilzed speed this time while Brian explained. "I have a new case but it's linked to an old one which didn't go so well. The bad guy was put behind bars but a friend died and another one went to jail as well." His expression darkened while he spoke. He felt guilty about loosing Letty because he helped her to become an informant and he felt guilty because he had told Dom he'd be a free man but the judge saw it differently. Angrily he stared out of the window at the bright blue sky which didn't match his state of mind.
Soon they pulled up at a few small houses. Brian rented one of the older, smaller ones. He liked the quiet neighborhood with mostly families. Not too fancy but not to dangerous either. A couple of kids were kicking a ball around on the sidewalk.
"That's me." He ponted to the house with a front porch and yellow paint flaking off. The skyline was the only car of its kind in the neighborhood between SUVs and station wagons. "I have a pretty comfy sofa in the back room. It's all yours. There are beers in the fridge."

As soon as they were back in the car things unfolded a little more. Jack listened to Brian's explanation in silence, realizing only now why his mood had changed. It couldn't have been easy loosing two friends like that. One dead, one in jail. But what he didn't understand was why the new case was linked with the old one. If the bad guy was behind bars, didn't that mean 'case closed?'. More questions arose, but glancing over at his brother, Jack decided against them. He could see Brian wasn't in the mood, so he would get some answers later.
The change in scenery wasn't what Jack had expected when they reached their destination. A quiet neighborhood with homely looking houses and family cars parked on their drive-ways, kid's playing around. Not exactly on the dangerous, high speed side of life, but it had it's charm. He checked out the small house Brian pointed at. It wasn't big, but it had all he needed right now. A sofa and cold beers in the fridge. Before he unbuckled, he turned and looked at his brother, slapping him on the shoulder. "Thanks man, I appreciate it." With that he got out of the Nissan.

"No problem, bro. Make yourself at home." The inside of the house was simple. Mostly used furniture. Brian tossed his keys on the kitchen counter and whistled. From the living room a low growl could be heard. Behind Jack a German sheppard mix appeared with his back hair standing up baring his teeth. "Easy, Jack." Brian stepped over to the biest and started petting his neck until he stopped. "Good boy." When the dog calmed down Brian turned to Jack and smiled. "Meet my warning device. This is buster. You'll be okay once he knows you and you don't run...he doesn't like people moving too fast."
With that Brian dissapeared into his bedroom upstairs where he took his suit jacket off and placed it on the back of a chair. Then he took the rest of the suit including the uncomfortable shoes off and placed his gun on the drawer. He pulled on some baggy shorts and an old blue T-shirt with some racing logo printed on the front. For a moment he sat down on his bed and thought about the case. Braga still pulling strings. He could feel the anger rising inside of him. Braga was the reason his friends had to suffer and he felt no remorse. The cop dropped his head in his hands thinking about it. Right there and then he decided to do whatever he could to keep Braga in jail as long as possible. If that meant pinning more charges on him then Brian was going to find the necessary evidence. He rubbed his hair and got up.
Back in the kitchen he grabbed himself a coke and found Jack staring at Buster. "Friends yet? Let's sit out back! We got some catching up to do and I gotta go out and work at a race tonight."

"Yeah.. ok" Was all Jack managed to say to the warm welcoming party that appeared from the living room. Sizing up the dog and it's teeth, the thing could take quite the bite out of you. Not something he was exactly looking forward to. And yet, to much of his joy, Jack found himself alone with the dog when he turned around to his brother only to see that he'd already gone upstairs. "Fantastic" He said to himself while he kept one eye on the dog. "Now you be a good little mutt while I get myself a drink, alright?" With slow movements he reached one hand out to the fridge door, but as soon as he touched it, the dog started growling again. "Shit!" Bad idea. The sudden exclamation gave the dog a short barking fit, which was not something Jack appreciated, but at least he still had his hand. Eyeing the dog again, who was obviously keeping an eye on him in return, Jack mumbled to the dog "I'll just stand here waiting for my jackass brother to come back down then!" After a few minutes that seemed to last a little too long, Brian finally appeared back in the kitchen cracking some joke. "Like we've known each other for years, bro. Now mind getting me a coke too? That damn thing of yours won't even let me move" Glad to get away from the dog, Jack stepped out back and plopped down in one of the old lawn chairs. With a smile on his face he asked "Now what's this thing about a race tonight?"

The dog followed them outside and slumped down on an old pillow Brian had put out for him. Brian put his feet up on the small table outside and leaned back. "You're a nosy little fella, Cracker Jack! I'm supposed to keep you out of trouble not get you in trouble!" He smirked at his mom's request while he took a long swag from the can. It was nice and refreshing on a hot summer day. He couldn't help but tell Jack about his passion though. "Every couple of nights there are street races somewhere in and around the city. Most of them illegal. But let me tell you, once you've tasted blood you need more! I had an assignment years ago which required me to race." He watched his brother's face light up. "I've done it ever since. Now I try to stick to legal races but ..." he made a fist as if he could grab it."..damn it's so...tempting, so bitchin', you know what I mean?" His blue eyes sparkled with excitement. Still he realized he had to tone it down a bit. "Tonight I'm not going to race though. I'm just looking for a woman, who might be there. She's got something to do with the bad guys we're after..." he caught himself babling about stuff that was stupposed to be confidential so he stopped. "I can't tell you more otherwise I have to shoot you!" He took another sip and sighed. "Good to have you here, brother. Tell me. Why are you in trouble this time? Do you have a job?" Buster lifted his head as if he wanted to know as well.

Now those were questions he had to think about. Did he have a job? No. Not anymore at least. Jobs required for him to be on time, be polite and follow all sorts of rules. All the things Jack would rather not do. Which brought him to the other question. Why he was in trouble. After getting another one of the many rants from his boss, he was late as usual, about how useless and a loser he was, he lost it. He let his aggression get the better of him and punched the guy, leaving him jobless and arrested, all at the same time. It was a lousy job anyway. Jack rubbed the back of his neck as he looked at his brother. "I seem to be out of a job at the moment" With a pause he added. "Due to a slight disagreement" Brian may be his older brother but he didn't have to know everything. Especially not something as embarrassing since he could have just quit the job and save him some trouble. In the hopes of changing the subject he asked "Would you mind if I tag along tonight? And you won't have to worry about me getting into trouble since I don't own a ride. Hell you won't even know I'm there."

His brothers explanation about loosing his job wasn't sattisfying so Brian asked bluntly. "Are you proud of that? Who's going to hire you if you punched your last employer?" He shook his head. "And who's going to rent a place to you if you don't have any money or job?" He chewed his lower lip while he waited for an answer which would probably not come. "I know you don't want to hear this and I'm not going to play your conscience all the time but I feel like I have to now! You're what...27? Why don't you find something you're good at? You like?" His expression softened. "You can stay here as long as you want to but please get your act together. That's it-I'm done with the topic and yeah, you can come tonight." He knew that bringing Jack to something as adictive as street racing might not be the best of ideas but he didn't want to be overprotective plus his brother was old enough to make his own decisions.

The questions Brian posed, kind of made Jack angry. Not at his brother, but more at himself. No he wasn't proud. He knew he fucked up, he knew it every time, yet always went for it anyway. So right then and there, he decided he'd have to make changes if he didn't want to remain a fuck-up for the rest of his life. He could maybe get a job at a garage or something. That at least required him to work on cars, something he was good at. So in order to make a truce with his brother, he said in a low voice "I'll find a job tomorrow" After drinking the last of his coke, he decided to finally give in to his urge for a smoke. Like earlier, he placed the cigarette between his lips, but unlike earlier he lit it without asking questions. He figured now that they were outside it wouldn't be much of a problem. "Anything I can do to help you with that chick tonight?" He asked while blowing out the smoke.

Brian inhaled the smoke his brother blew out. It gave him an urge to light a smoke as well. It had been ages since he had his last one. At least one bad habit he'd gotten rid of. In reply to Jack's question he laughed. "Yeah, try not to get into her pants-she's h o t !" He grabbed a ball next to his foot and tossed it into the small garden. "Fetch, buster!" The dog looked at him like. "You're kidding, right?" "Okay, bro. I'll have a snooze now. It's gonna be a late night!" Maybe he was already too old. Jack probably didn't need a snooze. Well maybe since he spent the past hours in a cell he did. "We're heading out at 10.30pm." With that he got up and walked inside.

"Ok gramps, have a good one!" Jack called after Brian, then looked at the dog while he mimicked his brother "Try not to get into her pants. She's hot" He shook his head laughing while the dog eyed him not understanding. As soon as Jack finished the cigarette, he grew bored. Blowing the last smoke out, he got up from his chair and entered the house where he went straight to the living room with a small tv. He plopped down on the couch. With one leg stretched out over the couch and the other still on the ground, he turned the tv on. The only even remotely interesting on at this time of day was some women's talk show discussing difficult teenagers. He chuckled at one of the kid's responses to it's mother. The kid had spirit that was for sure. He didn't catch much of the rest of the show after that. The couch was quite comfortable, so it was only a matter of time before he dozed off into a light sleep. The tv still quietly chattering in the background.
