It was early in the morning. Brian enjoyed the morning sun with a coffee in his hand on his favourite spot. The back deck. His bare feet touched the still moist wooden planks while his blue eyes gazed at the bright blue sky. A few seagulls flew towards the ocean and Buster played with the little unnamed mutt in the back yard. It was a good day. Especially because it was a day off.

When Mia had first woken up that morning, she didn't have a clue what to do. She had her normal day off today- but every plan she had made was cancelled now. After a long debate with herself, she had climbed into the car and set off for Brian's house.
When she drove up, there wasn't a sign of life in the house that she could see. She spotted Brian's car and frowned. "Hello? Is anyone home?" She called out, starting to the front door.

Buster heard her as soon as she pulled up to the house. His ears went up and he stopped playing. That caught Brian's attention. With all the crap that had happened lately he was extra careful now. So he went inside only clad in his boxer shorts and a T-shirt but with his gun in his hand. Carefully he looked out of the window to spot Mia's car parked on the side walk. His heart almost skipped a beat. With fast steps he closed the distance between the kitchen and the front door, opened it and pulled her into a hug. "You're back!"

Mia paused before knocking on the door, as she heard movement inside. She listened for a moment, almost missing the soft footsteps.
She opened her mouth to call out again, then froze as the door was thrown open. She gasped, as she was tugged into a tight hug, then realization dawned on her.
Laughing, she hugged Brian back, patting him on the shoulder. "Brian, geez, I wasn't gone that long!" She pulled back and smiled up at him. "For a second, I thought you might have been at work..."

It was true. She really wasn't gone that long but a lot had happened in those few days. Brian held her for another moment before he let go and looked into her gorgeous sunteint face. She didn't have much make-up on but looked just perfect. On the contrary to him who hadn't even shaved yet. The cop couldn't help but smile at Mia. "No, it's my day off today. I've put in a few extra hours when you were gone. C'mon in." He closed the door behind her and went into the kitchen. "Coffee?"

Mia smiled back at her favorite blue eyes as Brian pulled away. She had missed him too... not that she'd admit it to his face.
She started to follow him into the kitchen, then stopped to stiffle a laugh as she watched him walk away. Obviously, Brian hadn't been expecting her- he hadn't even bothered to put on pants.
"Sure, I'd love some." Shaking her head, she followed him, unable to hide her smile. "So, tell me. What were you planning to do today now that you don't have to play cop?"

While he pushed the button of his coffee machine and put a cup underneath it he smirked. "I like it how you say that...play cop." Just a second ago he had placed the gun back on the counter. The cop was already so deep within him that he couldn't shake him off and be good old Brian on his day off.
He leaned against the counter and crossed his arms in front of his chest. "Milk's in the fridge...if Jack didn't drink it all." Mia didn't even know about Jack being here. "Oh, my little crazy brother is staying here for a while."
He didn't want to tell her about Letty just yet. That kind of message needed a good moment.
"So how is aunt Mathilda or whatever her name was?" He scratched his head.

Mia watched Brian put the gun on the table and sighed to herself. The cop was the part of Brian she couldn't stand- it was just too cold to be her Brian. She shook off the sad thoughts and forced on a smile.
"Well, you know, you play cop. I play doctor." Mia wiggled her eyes suggestively and laughed, opening the fridge for the milk. She grabbed the empty carton and laughed as she shook it and tossed it in the fridge. "Your brother, huh? How is he?"
"Martha? Martha was ...fine. She cooked." She snorted, shaking her head as she thought of the four casserole dishes she had to drag in last night. "She cooked a lot."
Mia smiled another bright grin as she remembered her aunt's teases about getting a boyfriend. "She asked about you."

"I think you're better at playing doctor." Brian frowned slightly when he remember his recent screw up south of the border. He could have used 'Mia playing doctor'. It would have safed him the awkward visit at the Vets clinic. But that was another topic, which should be safed for a rainy day.
He watched her throw the milk carton back in the fridge. "Jack is..." For a lack of better words he added. "screwing things up like usually. Hasn't learned anything yet." He shrugged. "He's my brother. You gotta love him....well, not you. I mean he's a good guy." Mias presence made him nervous. It almost felt like back in high school.
Brian couldn't help but wonder what Mia had told her aunt about him. "Really? Did she ask about the good looking guy that you just can't resist?"

Mia smiled at Brian's nervousness and quickly hid her smirk behind her cup of coffee. She blew on the liquid for a moment and took a sip, wincing at it's bitterness.
"Oh, yes. We talked about a lot of good looking guys, including you." She teased, taking another sip. The second sip was better. "She seems to be under the impression I'm at the age where I should settle down. Like marriage."
Mia smiled sadly. "I just don't know about stuff like that with Dom being..." She drifted off, unable to finish her thought. She stared down at the coffee sadly, wishing she could take back the words. She cleared her throat and looked at Brian, faking a smile. "Well, you know. I just seems like there is more important stuff right now."

At first Brian wanted to ask her a cocky question like 'ah, you think I'm good looking' but when Mia started talking about marriage he had to hold on to his coffee cup very tightly in order to prevent it from smashing on the kitchen floor. Was this directed at him? Was this a question about whether he'd be ready for that? Goodness he wasn't even sure whether she wanted to be with him.
Quickly he drank a long sip of the warm liquid and looked into the cup as if it was real interesting. Brian was greatful when she changed the subject to Dom. "He'll be okay. His trial is next week and then he'll be a free man." The cop wondered whether he really beleived his own words.
His hand reached for hers and he gently pulled her along. "Come out back. I got something to show you." With Mia close behind him he made his way to the porch and whistled for Buster. The dog stopped running around the tree together with their new addition. Tails wagging both of the dogs ran towards the two people on the porch and greeted them. "We have a new pup." Brian petted the mutt behind her ears and picked her up. "Unfortunately Missy here doesn't have a name yet." He looked at Mia for help.

"I hope so. I'll be ready when everything gets back to the way it used to be..." Mia sighed, smile broadening until it was real again. Just the thought of having her family back at home, crowded in that tight little space, made her heart soar. If Brian said everything would be okay...
Mia grabbed onto Brian's hand and let him lead her out to the back porch. When both dogs clamored over, Mia felt her heart clench tightly at the sight. They were beautiful! Brian picked up the smaller of the two and held her out to Mia, who quickly scratched behind the mutt's ears.
"She's gorgeous, Brian! Where did you find her?"

"Thanks a long story. Let's say I found her or better she found me at a Vets practice a couple of days ago. I actually thought Jack would take her but he's not really a dog person." He watched the small furry animal lick Mias hand. With a smile he mumbled. "She likes you." Brian sat down on one of the old deck chairs with the coffee cup still in his hand. "If you can think of a name..." He motioned for Mia to sit down. It was really nice to have her back. So he couldn't take his eyes of her. "I really appreciate you coming by."

"What were you doing at a Vet's Clinic?" Mia strained over the edge of the porch to see if she could see anything wrong with Buster. The other dog looked fine to her, but maybe that was why she didn't notice anything wrong.
Mia sunk into the chair across from Brian, grinning as she rubbed the new dog's ears lovingly. "I don't see what's wrong with Missy." She leaned back into the chair and took a long drink of the coffee left in her cup.
"Ahh, well." Mia felt her cheeks heat up under Brian's gaze, "I didn't have anything else to do today..." She wasn't going to openly admit that she had been thinking about Brian ever since she had gotten home or that she was just as greatful to seem him well.

Brian contemplated whether it was a good time to tell Mia the 'long story'. For a while he sat and watched the dogs. Suddenly he decided it was better to tell her now than Letty dropping in on them. It would look like Brian wasn't going to tell Mia and he didn't want to have any more secrets from her. He couldn't. So he got up after she finished her coffee and led her into the house and upstairs into his bedroom. On the floor was a small backpack with clothes. Some spread over his bed. "Now. I'll tell you what I was doing at a Vet but maybe you want to sit down or something. There's big news." He motioned for the clothes. For a lack of a good start or the right amount of sensibility he stated. "Those belong to Letty."

Mia followed Brian upstairs to his bedroom silently, feeling her stomach sink with each step. Something was bothering Brian, she could tell, but why he wasn't opening up to her and tell her anything?
She glanced around the messy room with a frown. Right away she noticed that the clothes weren't Brian's- they were too small. She didn't take the seat offered to her and instead crossed her arms.
She opened her mouth to demand an explination, but Brian beat her to it. For a second, Mia couldn't believe what she had heard, then the questions spilled out of her. "What? What do you mean they belong to Letty? What are you doing with Letty's things?"

Brian blinked at her. "What?" He shook his head and pointed at the things again. "I'm not doing anything with her clothes. She is. Letty is." He swallowed hard and scratched his head. Something he always did when he was nervous. "Letty is alive, Mia. She sent me a letter last week that she's being held prisoner in Mexico. She asked me to come and help her escape." He searched her face and whispered with a slight smile. "She didn't die, Mia. She's alive!"

She's alive.
Mia stared at Brian as he stared back at her. The silence filled the room and the space between them akwardly. She found her voice again after the initial stunning moment was over.
"A letter, Brian?" She cleared her throat as she shuffled from one foot to the other. Her anger spiked and she threw her hands in the air. "What is this, Brian? You honestly expect me to believe this?? What are you getting at?"

Brian looked at her slightly confused. "Why are you getting angry at me?" He didn't understand why she wouldn't jump for joy. Obviously she though he was playing a trick on her. When he held Lettys letter in his hands he felt the same way. But how proof it?
Slightly upset he explained. "She sent a letter last week. I had it checked by forensics and it was genuine. So me and Jack drove down to Mexico on Monday to meet her at a diner, that she had mentioned in her letter. Unfortunately she had a couple of Mexicans following her." He shrugged. "I guess they were supposed to make sure she wouldn't try to run." He replayed the events in his mind. Everything had happened so fast that he could barely remember. "We ended up getting into a shoot out with them but managed to escape and bring her back across the border." Suddenly he knew how to proof his story. "That's how I ended up at the Vets clinic because I couldn't go to a real doctor because the FBI knew nothing about it. Guess what they would have done if they had found out!"
He lifted his worn out T-shirt to reveil the bandage that he had gotten from Matt 3 days earlier.
His blue eyes stared at her hoping that she would beleive him now.

Mia sighed, dropping her arms to her sides. "I'm not getting angry with you Brian, I just can't believe what you're telling me. I mean, Letty is dead. ...right?"
She listened to Brian's story with a confused look, not sure whether or not to believe all the madness he was telling her. Surely it couldn't all be real, right? But could Brian really make up a story this crazy?
She saw the bandages and felt the anger she had kept inside fade away, replaced quickly with anxiety. "Brian, Jesus." She rushed over to sit beside him, running her eyes over the wound. It looked fine, but it still worried her to her core. "I'm gone for just a little while and you get shot up... does it hurt?" She reached over and touched his arm, afraid to touch the bandages.
