Tag: JackToday everything went wrong. She had been late for work, her boss had yelled at her before she even had one drop of caffeine in her system and now her current job's paperwork laid strewn out on the pavement at her feet. Some people really didn't understand the concept of walking around others instead of trying to walk right through them and of course the neanthertall responsible for this hadn't bothered stopping to help her either. "Great. This is just great." Maxine muttered to no one in particular as she bent down moving quickly to make sure she was gathering everything. If she would even loose one sheet her boss would have her head and she'd be looking for a new job. She already had enough trouble keeping her head above water with her apartment, her car and everything else that demanded money in life. She didn't hear the footsteps, didn't hear the approach, but just as she reached her hand out for the last few sheets someone else already picked them up for her. So maybe the man wasn't as much of neanderthal after all. she thought as she began to rise.

After some dick in a suit practically crashed in to her without even looking back, Jack had been quick to pick up the last sheets before she had a chance to. He never thought he'd ever see her here, or at all for that matter, but that didn't mean he hadn't recognized her instantly. Maxine King. An old flame from Barstow, if she hadn't been more, and probably one of the reasons why he now lived in LA. Even if he would never admit that.
Rising the same moment she did, his eyes briefly wandered over the paperwork in his hands before they moved up to meet hers. She was captivating, still. But than again, she always had been.
"This looks.. exciting." He smiled, finally handing her her stuff back while keeping himself from allowing his eyes to wander over her body like they wanted to.

Maxine's heart almost skipped a beat when she recognized the deep voice before she even caught a glimpse of the owner. She knew it, missed it and even had wanted to hate it. But it couldn't possibly be him. she thought as she looked up feeling like a school girl when a small blush crept up her cheekbones. It was him.
"Something needs to pay the bills." She finally said when she composed herself enough, smiling as she stepped forward to take back the sheets from him. Their fingers touched for only the smallest moment, but it was enough to send that age old jolt through her body. Chemistry was an odd thing and she couldn't deny he still had her one way or another even now. Biting her lower lip she took a small step back while she tugged a strand of her hair behind her ear.
"So how have you been, Jack?" She asked softly.

Jack gave her a hesitant smile while he shoved his hands in his pockets, half glad she hadn't started hitting him for disappearing to LA without as much as a notice or a call. Sounded all too damn familiar, didn't it?
"Been doing alright.." He mumbled, neglecting to elaborate any further on the subject while he ignored the small pull she still seemed to have on him. There had been reasons they'd broken up, time and time again even, and he sure as hell couldn't have this. Not now or any time for that matter. Clearing his throat, he once again pushed old memories back. Maybe it would have been better if he had just walked by her.

'Doing alright.' That's all I get? Maxine thought disappointed as she held the papers to her chest. After the first shock of seeing him here so randomly she could feel the mixture of emotions bubbling under her skin. She wanted to ask him why and she wanted to slap some sense in to him for disappearing. How could he act so innocent?
"So this is how you're going to be? You left without even as much as a goodbye, Jack." She said harshly as she hid the hurt in her voice. He was not going to have this effect on her any longer than he already had. She wanted the answers he owed her and she was going to get them now.

Jack swallowed at her words, averting his eyes down and away from her. The smile, even though it had barely been there to begin with, had fallen from his face all together when every little memory came flooding back to him. Even now he couldn't deny that when they were good, they had been great, but it was exactly that what had scared the shit out of him. Commitment. For her, he had moved miles to just try and forget, hoping he would never see her again, but why had he stopped now than? Why hadn't he walked right on by, pretending he hadn't seen her..
"I'm sorry.." He muttered softly. Those two words sounded far too simple and stupid to even his own ears, but he meant them more than he could express. He was reluctant when he finally lifted his gaze back up to her, nervous of what he would find there.

Maxine drew her tongue over her lips before she softly bit on her lower. She couldn't explain how she felt even to herself. She wanted to be mad at him, but her feelings conflicted after she saw his smile leaving his face before he looked away from her. Maybe he wasn't as unaffected as he pretended to be. She thought.
She heard him appologize then and she bit her lip a little harder when her emotions overwhelmed her. She had wanted to hear more from him than two small words, but it was the way he said them that made her deflate. He meant them and she was unaware she was stepping closer to him until her hand rested against his arm. The why could come later.
She didn't say anything, but her eyes danced with the unspoken words when her arms wrapped around him and she pulled herself close against his body. Her head rested against his chest and as she heard the steady thump thump of his heart underneath she smiled, indulging herself in his scent. She still loved him.
